1996 CX Hatch- 49mpg and 0-60 in 12 seconds, wth?
I went on a long trip, all highway, and my fuel consumption was 49mpg (4.8L/100 km.)!? I went around 60mph (100km/h) the whole time. That is so good it does not even seem possible, has anyone else ever had similar consumption? I am sure that the calculation is accurate, I fill up to full each time and keep track of the mileage in between.
Additionally, I timed a couple 0-60 runs, accelerating onto the highway. The first one was 13 seconds, the second was 12 seconds. That seems incredibly slow! I didn't launch it, I was just rolling in first at 1200rpm, then punched the gas, upshifted between 5500 and 6000 rpm (manual transmission). Is the car actually that slow?
The reason I ask is because I am thinking maybe it needs a tune up or something. The idle has been rough on occasion, maybe the spark plugs or leads are going bad. After having it for four years it does not feel any slower, but maybe the degradation has been gradual. Do these numbers sound off to you?

i still have my 94 civic "specs" (the thing that shows all the civic models and their trims and specs)
it has the cx hatch as 56 mpg highway, BUT, thats a d15b
the 6th gen cx has a d16y7
and for 106bhp, 49 mpg is amazing
but im just talking out my ***
sounds like you could be running lean???, saving gas, and not enough combustion
but it takes my d16z6 like 8-9 seconds 0-60
d16z6 (125hp)
d16y7 (106hp)

I believe it.
I bought a new 1989 DX hatchback, 5 speed, 1.5L, 92hp. The car had A/C also. The sticker, which I still have, says 36 mpg highway. My job was 47 miles total from home and back again and maybe 50 or so if I went out for lunch. Between 35-40 of those miles were on the highway. In the summer I USUALLY got 42mpg, a few times 44 and once 45 per tankful. My previous Civic, an 81 DX (which got a best ever 37mpg which was done on I-95 leaving Ft. Lauderdale northward. Later that night I got gas in Georgia and the mileage went down to 25, yes 25mpg!) That Civic seemed to run easy at 63mph, the 1989 cruised at 65. These 40+mpg figures were all with the Goodyear Invictas that came on it. I always pump my own gas and always top it off AND always reset the tripometer and do the math. I once went 400+ miles on one of those small tanks. After 2 yrs I got another set of wheels and put on an asymmetrical tire from a famous Italian brand as winter approached. My mileage dropped to ONLY 36-38mpg and sometimes I had to drop to 4th gear on some upgrades if I did not approach them fast enough. I spent months putting additives in and cleaning plugs and changing the filter to no avail. When spring came the Goodyears went back on the car and the mileage went right back up. The cold weather and the pasta tires had cost me 15% of my fuel economy. When the Invictas finally wore out I went to new Mastercraft Metrics from TownFair . They were actually Coopers and were decent on gas and also in the snow. I gave the pasta tires away.
So, I know we can beat those sticker #s. Who needs hybrids? Bring back the CRX HF but give it the rear wiper this time, Si suspension, and also jump seats ( for insurance purposes)!

I think its closer to like 10secs stock...
But dude look how you driving the car... easing into the gas from idle is gonna give you slower times with ANY car... let alot 107hp 1.6L single cam engine... Come on use your brain... tach the car up and launch it if you really wanna see a "decent" 0-60 time..
And 60 mph is like the sweet spot for fuel consumption of alot of cars... Thats why most reviews give crusingin rpm at that speed... There was a study in a magazine long time ago... And they basically showed that you'll lose tons of gas mileage by increasing your cruising speed by just 10 mph....
I would love that kinda gas mileage but 60 just seems to damn slow for me... Especially when traffic is moving at like 70mph... But yea just enjoy the gas mileage... And stop worring bout 0-60 times of 106hp engines... LOL

There is no such thing as a decent 0-60 time for a Cx..... And I know I will get called out about this, but i recorded 50 mpg in my EM1 with a 6 psi JRSC on a drive through Texas and OKC.......200 miles,4 gallons of gas.........was not even near the half tank marker.....

I get mid 50's without doing any of the hypermiling techniques that net me mid 60's.
So you are right on track and could do even better if you wanted to.
When was the last time the car had a tune up?

Thanks everyone, I guess it is still operating properly. I really like that fuel consumption, and yes, 0-60 times are not really a concern.
Bad Brian, CRX HF sounds good to me, maybe the CRZ can come close.
solo227, I didn't want to launch it because I try to go easy on my clutch, and car in general, but yes that could have shaved some time off the 0-60.
Torqueless EM1, hmmm, you are saying that adding an sc might add 1mpg... I wonder what the payback period for that mod is, lol, jk.
pumafeet10, no actual "tune-up" for quite some time, but my mechanic looks it over every oil change.
