Im partly through the process of changing the timing belt on a 99 Civic (D16y7)

I got it all torn apart....Im at cracking the bolt. Today I bought 10 feet of metal pipe that I plan to hack into about a 5 foot section to attach to my ratchet and figure that will be enough leverage to get it off.

My question is - will this be enough to get that 17mm bolt off?

2nd. Im unsure on how to get it at tdc before removing the old belt. I have the manual, and it says to line up the two arrows and that once they are lined up....that its tdc and Ill be fine at that point.

Any hints/pointers/ideas etc? I really dont want it to get out of time---

i assume your talking about the crank pully bolt?
3 ways

1st buy an air compresser and a BA 1/2 impact
2nd buy the specialty tool that holds the pully and use a breaker bar
3ed fill cylender 1 with oil (that will hold the pully for ya) and use a breaker bar.

odviously #3 is a worst case deal
but that bolt is trqed to like 240lbs

as for the tdc deal use a long 1/4" extention in the spark plug hole for cyl. #1
if it's at the top of it's stroke your at tdc
or you can use the marks...

 

If you don't have a very powerful impact wrench, then you need a 2' breaker bar along with your pipe and a second 18" breaker for the special Hex tool that holds the crank pulley in place.
