Used 2002 EX or New 2010 DX?
I'm a fresh college grad and just got a full time job out of state. this means I need a car (and it'll be my first car) I also have to pay back student loans and pay for my apartment so my budget is a little stretched.
I'm in a dilemma here and need the expertise here. I'm not sure which one to get:
Used '02 Civic EX (top of the line) for $10,000 (45,000 miles)
OR
New '10 Civic DX-VP (bottom of the line) for $17,000
Is it worth the $5000 to go for a brand new car? It's really hard to find cheap used Honda's with low miles since Honda's are suppose to last really long. This makes used car buying for Honda's a bit...pointless?
I look forward to your guidance! Thank you!

Do Not Buy an '01, '02 Civic. If you are going to buy a used civic make sure its an '03 to current. The first 2 model years of last gen's civic had problems with their automatic transmissions, the manual transmission had bad syncros in my opinion. The last 3 model years of that gen were much better and looked nicer in my opinion. Plus they will have air con while the DX will not.
Oh right. The DX does not have AC. The DX-VP does but is $800 more. Dang
And if I need power lock doors, I'd need to go LX! Dang...
Ok. So if I can find a cheap '03 or higher LX or EX, I should get that over an '10 DX or DX-VP?

In short, I would not get a DX in any trim. So yes if I were in your shoes I would look at an '03-'05 civic EX especially because you aren't missing a whole lot in terms of accessories in the new generation, just in looks. Plus you will get air con, power windows, power locks, alloys perhaps, etc...
might as well just look for a certified-used '06 LX/EX so you get the newer styling, but with a lower price cause it's not an '08 or '09
fyi: i had an '02 LX 5 speed, ran it to the ground and it was still going strong with 140K on it when i sold it. wouldn't of hesitated to take it 'cross the country

why not get the 2010 lx? it cannot be that much more than the dx.. do some internet pricing/quotes and im sure you can find some good pricing right now, you can probably find an 09 lx left over for less than the price of that dx. plus if you're financing, the monthly difference would be minimal and worth it for some power goodies.
Just as an FYI, when I was looking around a few months ago, I found a 2009 LX 4d Man for:
MSRP is $18,125
Invoice is $16,854
Internet Price is $15,854*
That's including destination. So you should be able to get a decent deal on an LX (add $1k for auto if needed).

2002 is so last gen....
Lot of good responses.
Honda built boat loads of LX, so dealers are more willing to discount them. If you are a smart shopper, you will find LX cheaper than DX or DX-VP. What is the purpose of the DXs? (Bait) and switch.
If someone can't make the payments on a LX at MSRP, dealer will switch them to the DX. Don't fall for that.
Someone is always having a sale on Hondas.
Do your homework and get at least the LX. You will be happier in the long run too with more features.

The Civic is pretty much unloved from 01-05. In my opinion, the last great Civic was the 2000 model. If I was you, I'd look for an Rsx base model since you don't seem to care about performance and wouldn't need the type s. For the price you'd pay for a 2010 Civic, you'll be much happier in an Rsx. I dunno what the prices are in your area, but you should easily be able to get into a base model.
Well back to the pricing, Your only lookin to pay about 7-8 grand on that car. 10K is wayy to over pricey.
I did get this from Wiki about the 7th gen
This was the first Civic not to have a front double wishbone suspension, which had been used in the fourth to sixth generations and popular with enthusiasts, instead replacing it with a space-saving and simpler MacPherson strut.
Looks wise, an 01-05 is just plain ugly to me. You don't seem like a performance guy, so the struts most likely won't bother you. If you're considering a 17k car like a 2010 Civic, I say step into an 05-06 Rsx with more luxury, better everything and some cash to spare.
A 2002 civic shouldn't even be worth 10K. KKB is never a good website to look at, IMO I think it's out of date. I remember I took my car 2005 Civic EX Special Edition to the Honda dealership and they would only give me 4 grand for my car if I was to trade in for a 2006+ model. My dad was like **** if my car is worth 4 grand I'd buy 7 of em. Haha.

Why is this 04 Civic EX selling for 10K?
That's my ideal car right now...I just got off the phone with him. How do you negotiate a lower price? I told him I saw 06 LX around the same miles for $9000. He said that doesn't matter...
haha
I LOVE performance but my budget right now is a bit..
I vote for a third option. You can get a pretty damn nice post 88, pre 01 civic for much less than 9k. You should save all the money you can to pay off those loans. Debt is a bitch.
I was looking at this 01 Acura Integra
and insanely cheap 07 Scion TC
and 04 Honda Civic LX
Thoughts?
