Default Turbo or Swap?

I have a 97 Civic EX with a D16Y8 in it, and I was wondering if I should save up and turbo it or an engine swap?
I dont know if i want to do both cuz I am low on $$ so if I swaped the engine it would be a long time before I could turbo it, and idk how long im going to keep this car.

P.S. I do use this car alot so I would like to try and save as much MPG as I can.

Boost it and get it tuned.

You can also use it as a daily driver.

But what is your budget?

If you swap or turbo, you will lose MPG. There's no way around it...

I dont really have a budget, Im just trying to plan what to do so I can start saving, so the more I have to spend the longer ill have to save up.

I might be mistaken but cant you turn the boost off on turbos to save MPG?

yes, as long as you stay out of the boost, millege wont be affect to much, and swaps, you wont really loose to much either, id be supprised if you lost any.

turbo-500-3500
swap, 1200-10000

As long as you don't floor it you should be fine.

BTW you shouldn't be driving fast on the streets anyways.

How can you tell what kind of engine you have? Is it a VIN code?

Boost gives the most bang for the buck, but the Y8 is weak. At least research about how they spin bearings.

pop your hood and under nealth the rad hose you will see a stamp on the block and it will tell you what type of engine you have.
next time SEARTH! 10 seconds on google could have told you this.

Anyone on a budget and looking to reliably turbo their Honda is in for a rude awakening, especially if it's your only car.

i think that half the people on this forum are walking around *** backwards.. just see what kind of deal you can find... i just got a parts car with a gsr minus the head, gsr tranny and a complete B1 in it for 150 with a title... u can buy bolt on turbo kits from JDM sport for the d-series for 800-1000 bucks.. just see what kind of deals you can get... make sure your tune is good... i would change the head bolts over to arp studs just to be on the safe side... but u can usually find a good deal somewhere.

i agree with that..u gotta be careful when boosting ur only car :S

but from what i've heard, d16s can run up to 200whp reliably on stock internals. 7 psi or less boost is normally ok..check out www.turbd16.com for more info.

the edelbrock kit is insane, but it is way expensive too..it'll run u about 3000$ but comes with absolutely everything u need and pretty good numbers (185ish hp and 145ish ft/lbs torque at the wheels i believe). u can do better for 1500$ if u research and buy parts seperately, but that kit is the safe bet as u can just install it and drive without tuning.

i'm going thru the same problem now and am having just as much trouble deciding..swaps are good and reliable but pricey with less gains than boosting..in the end its up to u and what u want!!

like i said... www.jdmsport.com... reliable... my friend has a JDM D15B on 8lbs making about 160 on a stock motor, minus the tune on the computer... why spend 3K on a kit that will make about 20hp more than a 1K kit?
