Head gasket choice question
Hey all, new to the forum as you can tell. Used to be a BMW e30 series owner, however, due to cutbacks, went with a more fuel efficient Honda Civic.
Bought it from a family member. The deal was I bought it cheap because I had to replace the water pump (and me being me, I did the water pump, belts, timing belt, plugs, distro cap/ rotor, and thermostat...
However, driving to work this morning, had an upper coolant hose explode (drying out, arrrgh), but by the time I had noticed, I had been driving just long enough to blow the head gasket too.
Now, most people would give up by now, not me. I am scouring the net looking for the best deal on a gasket kit to replace it all (as I normally did on the e30's I would buy before selling...).
I am running into a bit of a question though. I called the local autoparts stores (the Zone and Oreilly's) and it seems that they can't provide me with the correct kit as I don't have the Canadian model VIN (starts with a 2). I am being told I will have to go to a dealer in Wichita who can sell me the correcto one. Nice. BS.
Here is the deal, I have found many sites that give me the ability to buy the kits, and they all list the different engines available, but why is there two different (or three?) VINS for the 92 Honda Civic DX. I have the 16v, SOHC, D15B7 motor.
My VIN starts with 1HG, and looking at this post here: https://honda-tech.com/forums/general-discussion-debate-40/vin-numbers-described-1521231/, it seems there is nothing fancy about my car, just average american built....
Would I really have to scour the net for the right kit, or is the kit the same no matter where the car was built (us vs. canada)?

ebay gasket kit for crx 1.5l has headgasket, exhaust manifold, intake manifold gaskets as well as valve cover and all seals. $30 shipped for one, cant beat the price. im running one and its been fine for 600 miles
Get one for a D16Y8 from the dealership or one of the online Honda stores.
Or just get whatever they're offering at the local auto parts place as long as it's a multi layer metal gasket. They'll all work.

your auto parts dealer doesn't know what they are talking about.
The vin just tells you where it was manufactured (at least the first number) and not what market it is for (Canada, United States, Europe, etc)
just look at your block and see what is stamped on the front.

disregard this post... since its completely wrong...
your VIN tells EVERYTHING... thats what its there for... and why dealers need it to work on your car.
** also a 30 dollar headgasket set i LOL at...
AutoZone does sell the headgasket for your car, part number is 9915PT. When you go to autozone and have the headgasket package in hand, look at the front cover, it will have a couple of engine codes (D16z6, D15B7, D16Y8,etc) that the headgasket is used for. Post back if you have any more questions.

LOL all you want, it's been working fine for me. Has valve seals that normally cost $30 in there too, same brand and everything.
