Default Car not accelerating past 3k rpms.

When i had the car in the garage i could hit the gas and rev the car as high as i wanted, when i put it in first, went for a drive, everytime i hit 3k rpms the car sounded like it was backfiring and would not accelerate anymore, it did this in every gear at around the same rpms, i checked to make sure that the spark plug cables were tight and the main cable on the distributor was tight, dont know what else to do?

It sounds like your catalytic converter may be plugged.

Try separating the exhaust pipe at the bottom of the manifold or BEFORE the cat.

It will be really noisy, but take a quick spin and see if you still have the problem.

could be the cat or it would more likely be a fuel delivery problem. look into the cat first as that an easy thing to look at. next get a fuel pressure gauge and mount it to the fuel rail to make sure that your getting the right pressure at all loads. sounds like you have enough fuel to get to 3K and thats all she wrote. could be a filter thats pluged or a failing pump bent line anything that could be a restriction. good luck.

Do no think it is a cat cause you will throw a code for it. and it will probably rattle too as well.

is your speedometer working properly?
or do u have a chipped ecu?
I had a friend who decided to put an aftermarket tach on his car and accidently disconnected his speedmeter thing and his ecu kept making it backfire at 3k
