The B16 trans has the shortest gears (other than the '98 JDM ITR 4.785:1 trans) which will give you a head-ache on the highway. The shorter gears feel much better for autocrossing than any other trans I've experienced. The GSR's big jump between 1st and 2nd make it my last pick. The big gap feels terrible when you have the chance to compare it to the B16's gearing.

Here are other great options:

B16a with LS 5th gear. This is a great budget setup that will give you all the gearing you'll need and a nice cruising gear for the highway. I haven't experienced it on a race track to see if the big jump between 4th and 5th are going to be a problem but 4th tops out at about 105 ish. 5th is so tall that you lose a lot of pull (for a stock setup). Cost wise, through a wholesaler, you can buy both gears for 5th for about $70. With the age of the transmissions, it may not be a bad idea to have fresh bearings installed along with the 5th gear.

LS with a 4.40:1 final drive. If I didn't have a spare B16 transmission laying around, I would have done this. The LS's gearing is evenly spaced but overall is taller than a GSR's trans with the same final drive. The stock 4.25 (or is it 4.26?) of the LS makes it a very long legged transmission. You can probably find stock ring gears fairly inexpensively.

LS with ITR 4.785:1 gears. This is where it starts to get pricey. Very short final drive, and probably one of my favorite setups on paper. 5th gear with this ratio is still better than a stock B16 on the highway.

Good luck!

what kind of b-series? b16? b18b? b18c1? b18C?

If your going with a b18b, i'd stick with the stock LS tranny. I've driven a b18b and b20 with a b16 tranny and i didn't like it all.

i dont mind the b16 tranny on a b16 or b18c, its well proportioned IMO, 5th gear is a pain but i've learned to deal with it.

OP, keep in mind the b16/b18c revs higher for a reason.

Well tell you this... I have a 99 civic SI and I love the gearing... But I have a home boy that has a b18b with a B16 tranny and his car can only go like 90mph cause his motor wont rev any higher... So if you got a Vtec motor that will rev to 8000+ then B16 tranny all the way! But you are gonna do an LS swap id stick with LS tranny or GSR

That's why you need an LS or GSR 5th gear! The B16 gearing is the best for autocross. However, on a race track or daily driving, it doesn't really matter...you'll never see the crappy 1-2 shift of the GSR transmission.

depends on what you want to do in the long run! if you are going all motor and dont plan on driving highway speeds all the time B16. All motor and alot of highway driving GSR. But if you are going turbo LS tranny so you stay in peak boost longer with out having to shift all the time.

Seems to be a divide on B16 or GSR.

B16 with LS 5th will give me quicker start from dead stop and cruise gear? ... bump.

I daily drive a B18C1 with a B16 transmission, and it's not that bad. It does cruise right at 4000 rpm at 70mph, which is a little silly, but you get used to it. Not a big problem for me, because I don't usually go over 70 unless I'm passing.

The short gearing is fantastic for acceleration. I have absolutely no problem with the placement of gears 1-4. I really wouldn't want to trade it for a gsr transmission. However, I am planning on throwing an LS 5th gear in it when I open it to replace synchros. Really, I will miss my 5th gear whenever I get rid of it... the 5th gear pull is amazing because it's so high. 50-70 in 5th on this transmission feels like 50-70 in 3rd on my old d16y8.

*Everything* about a B16 transmission is positive with the exception of the highway gearing. I would totally recommend one unless you're one of those guys who drives 85 everywhere.

The tall 5th gear is kind of strange. If I think of it, I'll try to get some videos, this weekend, of what it's like to drive with the B16/LS5th setup.
