any 96+ USDM engine should have a vin tag on it. If its been cut/removed (which it sounds like it has) then there is a high chance the ref will notice it and flag it as stolen. They can take your car at that point.

California state referee has finally began enforcing the rules and no longer will bar a JDM engine.

Your motor might be stolen, although I could be wrong.

Shouldn't there be another vin stamped in the top of the block between the head and the block on the tranny side.......You would have to pull the head to get the number but it should be there. But it does sound like you got a stolen motor, why would you ever pull the tags off or grind the numbers down...?

Even if you had vin tags, would you also need proof you bought it legitimately?

The number you are thinking of isn't a vin number. I'm not sure what it is, but its not in the same format as a vin. I think its some kind of production number...

Definately sounds stolen. To ask here publicly for a VIN tag isn't smart either. I'm not sure if you have noticed but the rivets also have the "H" Honda emblem stamped into them as well. Just taking on some random VIN isn't going to be smart. You need to find a legit engine and wash your hands of the stolen crap.

Well. You know there really isn't a vlid reason anyone would remove a VIN tag from the block. I went to buy a block once with no vin and the guy tried to tell me he cut it off because "It looked ugly"... Come on

Anyways, yeah. I would say its a 99% chance the block is stolen. You run the risk of getting the car impounded if you are caught with it. I would say your next step would be to find a legit bottom end and swap.

Well to be honest, the vin tag on block does look ugly, if you have a clean block or a black painted one imho it does. BUT I wouldn't cut it off if I live in california for this very reason.

As far as getting a vin plate, I would sell you mine if I had a usdm B swap. Because in Pa it doesn't matter if you have it or not on your block. Also we don't need to be ref'd or bar'd, just tell them it's a JDM motor and pray they don't know a b18c1 is usdm gsr and that all jdm gsrs were b18c.

The way I see it, to me they have to prove it's stolen, nothing on that block can prove it's stolen without vin, so i don't see how a state/enforcement can assume and make accusations it's stolen without proof. Besides that it's not your fault you bought a car with a possible stolen engine in it.

Now before all you imported ukdm/jdm motor, rare and used parts owning people get on my case ask yourself this, are your jdm swaps, front ends, wheels and parts stolen??? NO?? Why because you have a reciept that you paid for it?? Are YOU sure they aren't stolen from overseas and shipped in containers to filter thru the US? You only think so because your told so, just like him buying this car.

Even if it's new old stock or BNIB it could of been stolen from a store, warehouse over seas and filtered here not likely but possible. I just find it very hard to be able to buy unlimited amounts of jdm swaps, fronts ends or clips easily and not think why and how do we have so many motors and front ends available like hot cakes??

just buy a new block.. start looking on the marketplace, craigslist.. im sure you could get a bare block for 200$ and just swap the internals over.. not the answer you wanted to hear im sure.. but its the truth. state ref will only BAR jdm engine if it is a direct replacement engine

EXAMPLE::
jdm b16 in an em1, legal..
jdm gsr in a gsr, legal..
jdm gsr in an em1, not legal..

come on kids, do your homework before making bad remarks.

1). Its not free
2). You cannot just go to the ref for your health
3). An EM1 CAME with a B16, so they wouldn't even give you a ref appointment

1- getting your sticker is now FREE... i called a few days ago to make my appointment and i asked exactaly how much it would be, response was "FREE." ill be going on monday to get my motor legit.

2- you can make an appointment anytime for an engine change..
http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResource...uidelines.html
and i dont know if there are any doctors working there, but maybe at your nearest location.

3- last but not least, an em1 came with a B16a2, a2.. not a ****ing B16a. JDM motors are not legal in usdm chassis unless bar'd even if they are a direct replacement engine.. you probably wont get a ref ticker if a cop pops your hood because im sure they wouldnt pay that much attention to it.

i guess the best thing to do since there are so many conflicting responses is to just go to our own local ref stations and see what they say.
