2001 Accord EX (check engine) code P1457
Ok, I tried to beat the system but actually the system beat me. I stopped by a local mechanic shop to have my check engine light checked. He needed my registration? and then found the code P1457. He said that he would need more time to troubleshoot the code. So he reset the code and I was off to my local DMV for inspection. I FAILED. The lady said I needed to drive at least 200 miles before coming back for re-inspection. She asked me if I had work done on the car, and said that if I replaced a battery it could have reset the memory. Anyway, Catalytic Converter and Everaporative System came up NOT READY in the OBD sytem test. I'm assuming the check engine light will come back on in 200 miles right?
How do I correct this code?
Car has 144K.
First mechanic told me to replace gas cap but code came back.
Check Engine light always goes away temporarily when I fill the gas tank.
Thanks!!!

After doing a little research online, I think I should take my car to the dealer to get fixed. It sounds as if this is a problem (several bulletins) the dealer can resolve in one shot instead of having a mom and pop go back and forth. Anyone disagree?
I'm not trying to say that dealer techs are better than mom and pop techs.

i'm finding that that's the EVAP canister leak code. i would not want a mom & pop place touching that unless they specialize in newer imports/honda. especially since it's tucked up next to the gas tank... which is completely incased by the rear suspension crossmember...
i've heard that continuing to fill the gas tank after the filler nozzle has clicked off at the gas station can flood some of the purge valves and so on. one other simple thing is being sure the gas cap clicks three times when you tighten it.
if you know you havn't overfilled the tank, and you always get about three clicks from the gas cap when you put it back, it may be time to head down to the dealership or a reputable import/honda shop.

Thanks Mark!
Every time I fill with gas the check engine light goes away.
Is it possible the car will pass inspection when the light is off?
Or will I still get bad readings at DMV with the check engine light off?
I could easily fill the tank down the road and go through inspection with no check engine light.
Thoughts?
One Honda dealer told me they replace the cannister assemby for that code and it's about a $500 job.

i think you're full tank trick would only work if you also cleared the code for the ECU memory. fraud is not such a good idea though..
lol
Actually, It FAILED inspection. I'm going to give my company mechanic a shot at it. I told him it was a cannister related leak code which is probably caused by corrosion from salt. Hopefully he won't tare me a new a hole...

A p1457 can be caused by a multitude of things. PCS not operating, CVS not operating, Bypass solenoid not operating, an actual leak... Anyone who understands the systems and has proper equipment can diagnose the problem, dealer or independent.
