2001 rear brake rebuild
I did a partial rear brake rebuild on Saturday. It was fairly straight forward for the most part. Unscrew the cylinder, replace the seal and dust cover. Then push into the caliper and undo the snap ring. I read that you needed a special tool for this, and I must agree. I already had the 11-piece harbor freight snap-ring set, and I ended up taking the big one and dremeling it down to fit down the caliper. At the bottom of the cylinder is a small cylinder-shaped piece with a seal on it that gets pushed by a pin by the e-brake cable to engage the e-brake. Unfortunately, I put an impact wrench on the bolt that the e-brake arm pivots on, and wrecked the internals where the pin engages the cylinder. After taking it all apart, I found out that I didn't even need to touch this bolt. Oh well, I'm getting a new rebuilt caliper today. The rebuild kit I was working with was from advanced auto which included the 2 seals, and the cylinder dust cover, but not the dust cover that goes on by the e-brake arm. I would recommend anybody doing this job trying to find a full kit with the 2 seals and 2 dust covers.
