My dad's 97 CR-V is dinging with no key in the ignition and the lights are definitely off. I have no idea what could be wrong, also maybe related the auto door lock switch on the drivers door will not lock the ute if the car is off. Really weird right, I have no idea what I could have done.

 

Your ignition switch is f'ed up. I had an old Ford that did that for a long time and you could start the car without the key in the ignition b/c it thought that you had the key in it. You will probably need the ignition switch checked and maybe replaced.
