Has anyone ever installed an unbalanced flywheel?

I know most don't do this on purpose, but if you did install an unbalanced flywheel, can you please chime in and let me know your story.

never heard of one either. By unbalanced, do you mean damaged in some way? Or what?

I would highly recommend against it. It's attached to the crankshaft, and can spin at over 7000 rpm. Eventually a crank subjected to an imbalance will break. I've seen it happen on a 5.0 mustang with the wrong harmonic balancer installed... caused a ventilated block, bent rods, trashed pistons, bent valves, bent pushrods. Nasty sight.

your flywheel dampens engine vibration just like your harmonic balancer does. flywheels are "balanced". some even have weights on them. if for some reason you know your particular flywheel is not balanaced it should be removed as soon as possible to avoid flywheel bolt shearing off, or engine bearing damage.

Well, I had the stock flywheel on a gsr at first with motor mount inserts.

Gave me some crazy vibration around the time secondary butterflys came on.

Then i went to a lightened flywheel from ebay, they said it was cnc balanced and all.

I installed it with the old pilot bearing and it vibrates still around the time secondary butterflys come on, but alot harsher.

I'm scared, but I just don't have the time, money, or energy to do another flywheel swap.

Vibration only at certain rpms, sound like an unbalanced flywheel or bad pilot bearing to you guys?

pilot bearing would never cause vibration

sounds like either something is unbalanced ( probobly not). more likely sounds like your engine is missing at high rpms lol..

once again the question remains... how do you know its the flywheel....
