Breaking an Engine Control Module (ECM)
Hello:
I drove 40 miles to a car dealership to get an issue with an SRS light dealt with. The code causing this light was under warranty. By the time I watch 2 movies in their waiting area, the yellow engine light and flashing green key light are on. They concluded that the engine control module was broken and needed to be replaced for $999.
The car was towed to a different Honda shop where the mechanic agreed with the diagnosis. Replacing the ECM did bring the car back to the 1 SRS light state.
My question for this forum is how could one accidentally or on purpose or accidentally on purpose break the ECM? Fuses were looked at in 2 shops. I see no water damage or smell anyting odd. I opened the top of the ECM and nothing looks unusual (say someone pouring Grey Poupon to short circuit the board).
Thanks,
Doug

Sometimes there's a short in the system, causing an overload. It is just electronics, and sometimes some really weird things can happen in electronics.
