well inspect inside first and see if you need to pull it off, otherwise you can just drain it

I took it some place 2 get it done right cost 260 with 40 bucks in new gas from what they told me the process involves draining the tank ,droping it ,then pre cleaning it with 2 get loose crap outta the way then dip it in a bath of volitale liquids (I guess maratic acid) then soder/braze pin size holes if any then coating the inside so that it doesn't happen again

when i do my eclipse ill post it up as a diy project tutoral

I think you should take it to the dealer or some professional one.

Wow, did you park it outside with the gas tank open? Hydrocarbons don't cause rust, they prevent it.

IMO, if you're keeping the car for the long haul you'll probably just want to take it to a professional shop. Personally, i'd rather go get a new one with something so important to safety and the car's longevity.

Even the pros at the dealership said cleaning it is better cause now it has a fuel proof barrier that wont rust

and it was parked for a while with gas in the tank, but u have to take in consideration that the fuel we use down here in florida has etenol mixed in and etenol attracks moisture/water and combines with it like homemade moonshine

and gas does go bad and will rust if let sit to long

all fuels have some sort of moisture in it and gets worst after time

'Pros at the dealership'?

Gas doesn't rust. Gas goes bad in the sense that it can lose some of it's octane rating, but it doesn't just turn to something else. Gas is nothing more than a string of Hydrocarbons. The same hydrocarbons that you use in WD-40 or bearing grease to...dun dun duh, fight off rust.

Gas, by and large, is water free as it is a hydrophobic molecule. This is why gas will form a visible layer over water. They don't mix. Moisture can get into the gas tank but it would take a **** TON of moisture to rust out the gas tank. Unless you live next to a swamp AND you left the gas door open and you had no gas cap, you have a puncture of the tank of some type. There simply isn't enough moisture in gas and in a sealed tank to rust a gas tank in less than a couple years.

This. A new one is less than $300. I'm sure you can find a part out as well.

gas will not cause rust however moisture will build up in a gas tank from just sitting over time. Just went thru the same thing with car sitting for a couple of years. I just gave it a good cleaning and replaced fuel pump (pump was rusted too). Changed fuel filter too. In a couple of months I will change it again. price a new tank I think they are 170 to 200.

Where r yall finding these prices? From who dont tell me dealership cause i checked 5

And yes the new gas not old is the problem google it. not saying ur wrong im sayin the new gas absorbs water faster than old n the car was sitting for a couple yrs ethylol is plant based and binds with hydrogen leaving a bi product of oxygen not alot it takes time

but tank tank is new to me now i look inside and all problems r solved and it now has a coating inside dat makes it superior to all metal tanks thats why i got it done for that coating so im not saying a new tank isn't better but imma go this route to see how it holds up then i can give u all updates on it

Ethanol is reactive due to it's polar nature, I'll give you that. Still, it's not just going to turn to water. The -OH end of Ethanol will absorb the water vapors but that takes serious time and consider that only the top layer of gas that physically interacts with the air in the tank is what is going to react. So not only do you have limited surface area, you also have limited humidity with a closed tank.

So again, it boils down to 2 things. Either you left the gas cap open in a high humidity area for years or you have a hole in your tank somewhere where outside humidity is getting in.
