Is the ignitor in the distributor the coil? or are they different?
I was told my car needs an ignitor and I look on parts places and all I could find were coils, so I was wondering if the ignitor is simply the coil?
Ignitor sits below the coil. The coil has the spring sticking out, while the ignitor or ICM is smaller with 3 metal tabs on it. Plus, a coil is a lot cheaper then an ignitor.
Are you sure you need a new ignitor? My car would bog then die on me. I read out the ignitor and all the wires were reading good except one. Replaced the one wire that was bad and car works perfect ever since. Places around here wanted $200 for a new ignitor, yet I only had to pay $7.00 at pep boys for some wire and terminals.
$200 for a new ignitor? damn!!!! haha..
anyways, OP if your distributor is pretty old and has a lot of miles on it, you might wanna just replace the entire distributor instead of hassling with the parts inside. its only a matter of time before the unserviceable CKP sensor (crankshaft position sensor) goes out in which case you will have to replace the whole thing anyway.
its about $200 for a re-manufactured distributor at Pep Boys which isn't too bad. just make sure all the wire connectors inside are nice and tight and not loose or else your car might want to "cut out" on you.

ignitor and coil are two different things, you could swap a sohc ignitor, they work, only the mounting is different.
I just replaced the ignitor (aka ICM) in my 98 GS-R. Search on ebay for Honda Ignitor. $30, plus $10 for shipping. Worked for me....
I would be interested in knowing how the ignitor goes bad.... considering it just sits there. But my tachometer is no longer jumping around....
