Is it a rev limit or misfire/bogging at 5k rpm? Have you inspected the ignition system components and checked the fuel pressure and ignition timing?

it was running perfect in another car. it ran perfect in this car. so thumper says. i beleive him. but not i does this. its not bogging down. it sounds like 2step when i hit 5k.
the distributer looks good. the rotor looks new. timing is dead on.
so try another dizzy?

Is the 5k effect seen both when revving at idle and when driving?

Check your connections at the throttle body. I forgot what sensors they are but they have identical fittings and can be switched around causing many problems.

What voltages do you measure at the TPS with the throttle fully closed and fully open?

You might also want to measure the resistance of the Crank sensor in the distributor.

What's the fuel pressure with and without the FPR vacuum hose connected?

How old are the coil and igniter unit in the distributor? Get them tested.

Yeah this can definately be the culprit. Check wiring for good connections and make sure the screw that holds the rotor in didn't back out and FUBAR the innards of the distributor.
