Default Cheap rebuild ideas?

I just got an LS integra, it runs great other than a slight knock on startup. I want to go ahead and get the parts for the rebuild, as I have 3 weeks until my next semester of school.

Oh its a 95, and apparently it is a JDM B18B, as there is no number after the code, but I am assuming it is identical to the USDM LS engine.

If possible I would want to do as much of a rebuild as possible, I have found kits on ebay, including pistons, water pump, oil pump, timing belt, bearings, pretty much everything bottom end related + a few goodies.

Can anyone direct me to a reliable kit, maybe even an upgrade? I will be probably upgrading in the near future, but I don't want to dump too much into this as it is my daily, and to be honest, I don't like inline 4s or FWD.

But please put that aside, I am an enthusiast, but my goals are different than most of yours.

I am also looking for a set of GS-R black front leathers, a center console (shifter portion back) in leather

any ideas?

Thanks!

the knock is the only scary part of this rebuild cost wise. you might be having machine work done if it's rod knock and they are out of true. nothing major but you'll be buying all new bearings. you could use an ebay rebuild kit but there's a good chance you won't need pistons or an overbore. new rings and a hone often will work great as long as you check to make sure your cylinders aren't out of round or any scars or present. the other thing is the top end. you'll want 8 new exhaust valves. 16 new valve seals. make SURE the shop knows what they are doing with honda heads. it's not hard to screw up a valve job on one. double check the block deck for being true as well as the head and get a new timing belt, water pump and a full gasket set.

thanks for the post.

I wouldn't mind the machine work, the top end needs a valve adjustment, so I might end up grabbing a vtec head off my buddy for cheap.

I have heard of kits including pistons and such for 3-400 dollars. It seems awfully cheap, and just want to see if anyone has any experience with such kits, as the kind of car I come from, just a gasket set at cost is $300

it's the age old story about quality. if you're after HP the LS-V isn't a bad way to go since you're going to rebuild the head anyway. the better cheap pistons are nippon, bearing wise, you can use acl if you're doing machine work since the clearances can be set anywhere with a line hone and rod resizing. make sure you buy arp rod bolts and it's not a half bad idea to balance the bottom end with the flywheel and clutch.

DO write out the cost of all of it before you start.

Main goal is to get it running reliably. I will build a motor on the side after this happens.
I will ditch the ls-v. Found out the head was rebuilt not long ago.

I am getting a kit that I found through my buddy

it comes with new pistons, rings, headgasket, all seals/gaskets, new bearings (all)
I am also buying ARP rod bolts, and getting a new oil pump/timing belt.

just because I don't like front wheel drive or inline 4's doesn't mean I don't enjoy this car.

I got a Subaru for going fast.

This is just going to be my daily that is clean and modded differently than most honda owners do.

I got:

Rings
Bearings
gasket kit
ARP rod bolts

Taking it apart tomorrow, I got a new oil pump off a GSR from my friend.
The oil pump is the culprit, it only has dry start issues. So hopefully the crank will be ok.
If not, my buddy has a crank for me.

I will keep you updated, car should go out of commission tomorrow night after work, should be ready by 9am Tuesday.

1-2 seconds of slight ticking on start up, at least when the car sits for 12+hrs is common. is this what you had happen or was it bond a fied low pressure for an extended period of time? most of the clacking should come from the top end

If it were me, i'd find a low mileage LS motor for ~$500, put it in, and call it a day. Too many little things that can come back to haunt you when doing a complete rebuild.
