I've done some searching and I'm still kinda stumped. My gf's '00 dx (d16y7) overheated after the rad. drain came loose on the interstate.
White smoke.
Rough starts.
Changed the head gasket (re-used head bolts).
Also changed the timing belt and timing belt covers (which had melted to the engine) and water pump.
Ran fine at first then problems arose.

After the car heated up it would misfire and shake a little at lower RPM and under load. We weren't getting a code but I suspected possible timing error on my part when I installed the timing belt. I marked the dizzy with a chisel and simply set it back by eye when re-assembling.

I put a timing light on the engine and it was advanced to far.
dizzy is almost fully retarded now to get in time
the problem is worse and now i'm getting misfire codes 73 and 74 (rndm. misfire cyls. 3,4)
dizzy position is about 6mm(1/4") from my original mark
I set time with blue service plug jumped and set the mark on the timing belt covers to match the middle of the 3 marks on the crank pulley which I think is 16 degrees adv.

Anyways. Does anyone have suggestions? Likely cracked or warped head or block? The car ran fine before all this happened. Maybe I simply have the timing off (belt).

 

maybe the timing the belt is off a tooth.. sounds like thats your problem since you had to retard the dizzy so much to get it on timing.. if not well check your coil, spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor...
