Default D15B7 timing..help me please!

Ok
picked up a 95 dx, needed head gasket + timing belt tensioner, and timing was already off, possibly only a tooth? It ran, mostly smooth stuttered a little bit. Took it all apart, replaced the head gasket. Inspected water pump, slight play on gear, I imagine that's not supposed to be? replaced the timing tensioner. The timing belt cover wasn't there to begin with, so i'm not sure if there are any timing marks on it that I need? So basically starting from scratch, new belt, how in gods name do I time this thing? someone help me please! : )

Ok..so by searching far and wide, i finally figured out how to time it. I got all the marks lined up, and the 2 tdc marks on the cam gear lined up with the cylinder head, and the distributor looks like it can only go in one way. All back together, and it turns over but almost coughs every few turnovers? i'm lost..any feedback from anyone would help, thanks!
