Icon3 Car broke down last night

Hey,

So the car made some crazy weird sound last night when driving, and I pulled over right away. From what I can tell the pully tensioner bolt came loose, causing the power steering belt and the aptenator belt to come off. It was still running for a good min while I went and looked to see what was going on. I'm going to go look at it today and see if I can fix this.
Any thoughts? Think it could be something with the balance shaft or it's belts? How can I tell?

H22a engine with manual tensioner.

Thanks

Your not really giving us much to go on as to what the problem is. Other than your pulley may have loosened and the accessory belt fell off. Is the belt still in one piece?

The accessory belt has nothing to do with the balance or timing belts so those should still be OK.

If all that happened was that the tension bolt came loose. All you would need to do is put the belt back on and tighten it up. This would be a good time to inspect the belt. You should replace the belt if it is dried out, broken or worn.

Hey,

The belts are still in one piece, and i'll inspect them. As i mentioned the only thing i could tell is that the tension bolt came loose ( i could turn it by hand ) and that's all I could tell.
I agree that the internals (under the side cover; timing belt tensioner, balance shaft belt, etc) should be ok, especially since the car was still running fine when the belts were pretty much off.

I'll check the belts as you mentioned and tighten the bolt. Kind of afraid to start the car, so I think my main question was how do I know if its ok to start the car (after tightening up the pully tension bolt.

thanks in advance

Like you said, if the motor ran for a bit after the belts slipped off. I doubt anything is wrong internally. If you want some piece of mind then you could remove the distributor cap and rotate the crank 720° by hand(wrench). While you are turning the crank have someone watch to make sure that the rotor button in the distributor is turning. Rotating the crank 720° will ensure that nothing has dropped internally as well.

Side Note* If you start it up and you do hear something out of the ordinary. Shut it down immediately.

sounds like something similar that happened to one of my civics the belt came off because i forgot to tighten the tensioner and the tensioner pully was sitting against my crank pully and making all kinds of obnoxious noises, i would definately say it is just that tensioner bolt, throw the belts back on and tighten them up and it should be good

ya, Lethal_Threat you are correct. Mine was making the same sound. The flywheel is turning when i turn the crank, so its just a matter of loosening the altenator and power steering units, getting the crank pully on there straight , tighten, and tighten the belts.

thanks everyone for your input , muchly appreciated.
