92 honda accord gets poor fuel economy
Maybe some out can help me with a fuel economy problem I being having with my 1992 honda accord dx.I consistently get 15 miles to the gallon over the road and around town. I have a light foot on the peddle. I have seafoam the engine through the brake intake vacuum hose. changed out the 02 sensor with a Denso part.I have changed the map sensor and cleaned out the egr ports and I still get the same mileage.I am running ngk plugs and ignition wire and try to use original parts to no avail. My timing belt has been changed also my cts sensor. My idle with the iac disconnected was adjusted to 750 rpm. I did a compression check I am getting 170 pressure on all cylinders and I burn no oil.I took it a while back to a independent honda repair shop in Chicago to no avail. I did not want to go to the Stealerships. My vacuum at idle is 18 psi . I check my egr and purge valve valve they checked out good. The lower spark plug o-rings on the cam shaft are leaking oil into one spark plug well but not much oil can I see.I am also told by mechanics that valve adjustment would not make that much difference to my fuel economy.I am interested in hearing comments from more enlighted repairmen then myself. I have both the Helms manual and haynes manual and have ran out of ideas. Thanks
Any oil in the cylinder will throw off the timing via misfiring and kill your mileage.
Do a gas-cap test and see if the tank pressurizes; that's another spot to lose fuel.

Do you know if the coil or ignition control module (ICM/ignitor) inside the distributor have ever been replaced or tested? You could have a week spark due to a failing coil or ignitor. If you take a spark plug out of the engine what do the electrodes and insulator tip look like?
Thanks Bobinator5000 for the reply. I did a fuel pressure check with a pressure tester and it was within specifications I also checked the fuel pressure regulator for fuel and vacuum tested the regulator and it was good.
Thanks Ghost Accord for your input I broke down on the highway two years ago and replaced the distributor realizing the ignitor module is a weak link.I have done a resistance test on the coil but realize that under load you might get some thing opposite because of the higher voltage.

I had poor fuel economy on my 96 Accord 2.2 VETEC. Had a fouled spark plug and engine light code for the plug #3. I had all new plugs, wires, dist. and light was out but came back on in a week. Had the cat. changed with a new aftermarket, and went from night to day difference in fuel economy and overall performance and that was three months ago. No problems since.
you've talked a lot about the engine... what about tires and brakes (sticking or excessive drag)? which transmission, auto or manual? any extra weight in the trunk or backseat?

Hi I have a 1992 honda accord dx with only one 02 sensor in the exhaust manifold. If my headpipe metal gasket from exhaust manifold to headpipe is missing will this affect my 02 sensor. Also to check the fuel pressure regulator with a fuel pressure tester, will squeezing the return hose cause my fuel pressure to go up .How much should the fuel pressure go up.

To test the fuel pressure you disconnect/pinch the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator. With the vacuum hose disconnected/completely pinched off you should see the pressure rise up to 35-41 psi. Then when you connect the vacuum hose it should drop down.
