Default Short shifter

Quick question my friend just got a 91 hatch and the shifter is cut instead of neing an actual short shifter bought fromm the stire will this do the same thing as a short shifter or qould it be better to buy one?

It's not the same, because on an actual short shifter the bottom below the ball is longer, that's what actually shortens the throw.

If it's shortened above the ball, it could actually make it harder to shift couldn't it?
if its cut above the ball, the actual distance traveled will be decreased, but the drivers input force must in turn be increased.
on a short shifter, even if they sit higher, the throw will be decreased as well as driver input, because there's more leverage on through the pivot point now
