Default Looking to buy 215/45/17 A/S

I'm looking to pick up a set of decent 215/45/17 All seasons for my civic

I've narrowed it down to 5 tires:
Dunlop SP Sport Signature (215/45/17)
Bridgestone Potenza G 019 Grid (215/45/17)
Yokohama AVID H4S (215/45/17)

Kumho ASX (215/45/17)
General Altimax HP (215/45/17)

I've done some research and it seems like the first 3 are pretty decent but also have some negative reviews (especially with the yoko's and tread noise). i was wondering if any of you guys have had any experiences with these tires?

The last 2 are a bit of a stretch, but i figured i might as well include them anyways.

The Kumho ASX offers the best performance of the five tires you have listed there, and that's the one I recommend.

I would also consider the Goodyear Eagle GT, which is slightly more expensive than the Kumho ASX.

Not true. It's one of the best all-season tires out there - better than the SP Sport Signature and the G019 - and significantly less expensive than the rest of the best all-seasons (e.g. Michelin Pilot Sport A/S, Pirelli PZero Nero M+S, Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position, etc).

It depends on what model (Civic?) and year the Si is.

^ hmm, interesting. i will take a look into them (more indepth than what i have)..because a few people have told me they are loud and the ride quality sucks. and i was looking on tirerack for their reviews/surveys and tests, and they didnt score that great. how are they in wet traction? thanks nsxtasy

typically for 17's, people use 215/45/17

Loving a set of ASXs on an 02 Audi A4 1.8T. Great wet traction, minimal noise (until they wear really low), nice and responsive for an all season.

Don't go by user reviews. All the crappy tires have great reviews, from people who are happy that they hold air. The good tires were all purchased by discerning users, who rate them down slightly for various reasons (not as sticky / louder than other previous tires).

Depends entirely on the car. A 92 Si can't really run 17s, a 99 Si should use 205/40-17, and an 08 Si would use an even larger size.

Good point. Well, maybe I should reconsider all my options. What other tires would you say i'd miss that I should probbaly take a look into? i was pretty set on getting the Sp Sports but am still open to suggestions.

True. i should have said for 8th gen civics (06+), that is typically the size used.

As I posted above, the Goodyear Eagle GT is a very good all-season, and it's only a little bit more expensive than the ASX. The others I mentioned are all quite a bit more expensive, but if you don't mind the higher price, by all means consider them.

Here are current Tire Rack prices for 215/45-17 in their "Ultra High Performance All-Season" category:

Avon Tech M550 A/S $88
BFGoodrich g-Force Super Sport A/S $116
Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position $146
Continental ContiExtremeContact $95
Continental ContiExtremeContact DWS $116
Goodyear Eagle F1 All Season $120
Goodyear Eagle GT $100
Kumho Ecsta ASX $87
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus $163
Pirelli PZero Nero M&S $130
Sumitomo HTR+ $83
Yokohama ADVAN S.4. $162
Yokohama AVID W4S $98

Again, if you're looking for "bang for the buck", the ASX offers a lot of that; the Goodyear is a little bit better for only a bit more money. If money is no object, I'd go for the RE960AS.

Yup, 215/45-17 is a good size for those years Civic Si.

Kumho tires are an interesting bunch: people either love them or hate them. With that said, the ASX is one of the best ones they make. It is certainly an economical choice out of the bunch and provides great dry traction, but it does suffer a bit in the rain and in the snow (if that's the case for you).

Also, the Eagle GT tends to develop a bit of tread noise. Some people are thrown off by it, so I figure I'd mention it.

I would definitely go with the Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS or the new Conti DWS -- both excellent choices.

How well does the AST compare to the ASX?

I'm looking more for a High Performance All Season, rather than an Ultra. i would like to reduce the tread noise and have a bit more ride quality, which is why id prefer to stay within the realms of High performance as i've heard you will sacrifice both in Ultra

The AST will be louder than the ASX and has inferior traction in both rain and snow -- which is saying something, given the ASX's below-average traction in the wet.

Yikes. I will stay away.. is there anything quieter than the ASX for about the same price? with decent wet traction? Although i am in california, i do plan on making a few trips up to reno/tahoe where the roads can become saturated due to the ice but i wont be going when its snowing

The Continental ContiExtremeContact would be my choice in the same price range. While not as responsive as the ASX -- especially in the dry -- it will be slightly better than the ASX in the wet and way better in winter conditions for those times when you do go up to Tahoe.
