Axle Seal leak on stock 97 Civic DX
Hi all! I searched for transmission leaks but could not find a topic, so I decided to start a new thread for help. I just bought a used 1997 Civic DX with manual transmission. The previous owner replaced the left axle a year before I bought it. When I brought the car to the mechanic, he said oil was leaking from the left axle seal. So he installed a remanufactured axle and aftermarket axle seal. A week later I noticed it was leaking from the same place, so the same mechanic replaced the seal with a Honda seal. A week later, and it was leaking again. I brought it into the transmission specialist who suspects the remanufactured axle to be at fault. He also said that it might be the carrier bearings that might have gone bad. Can anyone give me some help as to which seems more at fault, or if there is something I can do to determine which is at fault? I do not wish to have them replace the carrier bearings, only to realize it was the axle's fault, or vice versa. I have not noticed any vibrations or strange behaviors while driving.
Yea, I brought the car in to the transmission shop to look at the leak, and they said its leaking from the left transmission seal. I could feel a puddle inside the transmission opening, the area where the axle inserts into the transmission casing.
I also had the engine pan replaced a few weeks ago. Just to ask, what color is manual transmission fluid?
