Does anyone know why the HDR4 kit is cheaper than the HDSS even though the HDR4 has a higher toruque capacity??

Less material and processing costs. Simpler design.

Fair amount of chatter, lots of diaphram spring pressure that makes the clutch grab abruptly and makes modulation harder, and faster wear on the clutch material and the thrust bearings (in short, reduced reliability).

And thats if the clutch disc is sprung at all in the HDR4 kit.. usually they use a riveted unsprung clutch, which is a terrible choice for street use. Your clutch becomes less "continuously variable" and more of an on-off button.
