I just picked up a 93 del sol and it has a d16z6 bottom end and i guess a non vtec head with a p28 ecu. I wanted to know what I need to do to make it vtec? Do I just find a d16z6 head and just replace and bolt on? do I need to anything else? Im a noob at this. And how can you tell if it is vtec? Any pictures would be nice. I regular drive b16 and b18 and I can tell when vtec kicks in. Thanks.

 

so i take it your throwing a check engine light corect?

it sounds liek all that is needed is a vtec head. d16z6 or d16y8

look for a solenoid on the head behind vavle cover on the head itself on the passenger rear side to tell if it is a vtec or not.

 

no there is no check engine light. What color is the plug?

 

Think its black or grey, but hes talking about a thing sticking off the back of the head. Its about 2-2.5" tall and 1-1.5" wide. If you dont have one, you can tell when you see one.

 

Ok i found the VTEC solenoid on the head. Green Plug. But VTEC is not kicking in. What do i check for next?

 

Then it is a Z6 or Y8 head. (likely z6)

Why do you think its not kicking in?

You know it only kicks in at high RPMS right?

If so, it may be clogged.
