Default I don't understand "Wheel Offset"

I have a Passat with 42-55mm offset

I would like to buy:

Audi A4 wheels with 35-45mm offset

What do I need to do in order to make the new wheels work? Is it more trouble than it's worth?

I do know that bolt pattern and center bore are the same.

Offset is the distance between the hub mounting surface and the center line of the wheel. Wheels that are low offset will have more of a lip or dished look because the mounting surface is closer to the center line. You can measure offset by placing the wheel face down (put some cardboard on the ground) and putting a straightedge across the back. The distance from the hub mounting surface and the straightedge is the backspacing. Subtract half of the wheels width and you have the offset. EX. 15x7.0 wheel with +40mm offset will have 5.07in of backspacing. too low of an offset will make the wheels or tires contact the fenders and messes with scrub radius and track width, which can be detrimental to safety and driving ease.

You need to know the width of the wheels you want to put on as well as the actual offset. 35-45 is a range, a wheel can only have one offset if its not staggered which I dont think A4's are.

when you say that the Passat is "42-55mm offset" are you saying that you're not sure what the offset is? or that the front is +42 and the rear is +55??

its impossible for a rim to have an offset of 42-55mm... unless you have spacers or something but thats a completely different thing.

anyway depending of fender clearance etc for a Passat because im not familiar with them it sounds like the wheels could fit.

thats a HUGE misconception. just because a wheel is low offset, doesnt mean that a wheel with have more lip or be concave.... offset is independent of those things, but it just so happens to be that way...

From the rules: https://honda-tech.com/forums/wheel-tire-56/9658-forum-rules-faq-read-before-posting-1188922/

8. This is honda-tech.com, a place for sharing information about Honda and Acura cars. This isn't the place for information about wheels and tires for your grandmother's Buick or your son's Mustang; there are other websites that specialize in those cars, where people will have more specific expertise with those cars than here.
