lulz... I don't think you are understanding the statement.
I didn't say FOLLOW the smoke, I was saying(should have said) POINT for the smoke.
You still need to make course corrections and get lucky, but if you initially start out by pointing where the smoke began (because of inertia) by the time you get to the intercept point, in all probability the carnage has moved away from that point

This reminded me of a freak accident I witnessed when I was a bigger rookie than I am now. A couple guys lowsided in front of me, and the road became filled with debris, oil and dirt...dodging on such slippery surface wasn't the best option, so I kind just braced myself through the dirt cloud just barely avoiding by inches my friend's R6 that was skidding and spinning on the road...
Besides, on the video the rider could've had a much better view of what was happening ahead of him...
Pretty badass nonetheless.

For sure on a curve if someone goes down in front of you, the tendency is to roll off the throttle and stand the bike up to try and avoid the wreck... this is wrong. As you do this, your will widen your radius and in all certainty the down bike is moving in that same wider radius direction.
Hence if you have maintained your direction towards the original point at which the rider in front went down... by the time you get there the wreck will have scooted towards the outside of the turn.
