DSS Stage 5 (old) stuck in diff - any suggestions?
As the title states I have a car with an older set of DSS stage 5 axles where the axle goes into the diff (VW not a Honda). The driver's side axle is completely stuck in the diff and the passenger side stub is stuck in the diff but the axle came off - I guess someone before me had broken the weld inside the cv to get the axle off at somepoint. I was able to get the trans down with the one axle attached but now am lost on how to get the driver's axle and the passenger stub out. If either was out I would be able to drive a rod through the diff and knock the other out but that is not the case. I talked to DSS and they were very nice but didn't have much to say except that it is an issue with some of the older axles and some brands of diffs. Good to know but not much help in my case.
Any suggestions on how to get either the axle or the stub out? I tried a set of vice grips on the stub and a hammer as per DSS to no avail. I have tried prying out the axle with a couple foot bar with no luck. I can't really take the trans apart with the one axle stuck in as its on the side of the case that lifts off.
I know its a bit of a longshot but I am out of ideas and open to anything at this point. Thanks.

I took a Harbor freight slide hammer puller and welded a pair of vice grip to it. It pulled it out like it was nothing. now, I use this tool for all kind of cool stuff. If I would of still had my quaife diff, I could have punched it out from the other side. At the time, I had a Wavetrac and it had no hole in the center.

I thought about an air hammer but the way the axle fits into the case it would be hard to get a good angle on it. Might be a last resort though. Now that I have stepped back from it and thought about it more I have a couple of ideas to try out. Thanks for the replies and for jump starting my thinking. Keep them coming - I am sure one of them will work.
