I've heard a number of stories about the latch separating from the hood, and that includes people who don't abuse their stuff. Some cf hoods are just manufactured poorly.

(or course, some people are just idiots, too.)

you could fiber glass a latch in and it would hold it

I would either use panel bonding adhesive to glue on a metal latch, or use hood pins. Or if you fiberglass a latch on there, fiberglass a latch, then get some long metal heavy duty wire and put a long string of it connecting the hood to the frame of the car, so if the latch breaks, it'll get caught by the wire and not smash your windshield.

On a similar note, I forgot to put my hood pins back into my car and it flew up and smashed my windshield. One of the biggest mistakes I've ever made. It was my own fault.

Just to add, because everything else has already been said...peanut butter is not going to hold up at all. It's just an oil that will make it look shiny for a while and then fade off quickly. If it's faded, you should try buffing it out, or just reclearing it. But if it's that bad, maybe it's just time to scrap it like you said.
