Default Need Some Help B20/VTEC

Ok so last night I finally got to buttoning up my B20/VTEC build i got the motor set at TDC both top cam gears aligned with one another both with the up position facing up and my crank pulley right on with the timing marks on the oil pump. So when it came time for me to reinstalled the timing belt and add tension I noticed my intake cam about a 1/4 tooth negative degress so my question is should I adjust my cam gear on the intake side a few positive degrees so it lines up with the exhaust and crank pulley at TDC. That would mean that the motor is at TDC all around right?

i would get everything back on tdc. its not worth putting the other cam and crank off a little so you dont have to fix the intake cam. just fix the cam its not that hard.

Well everything is at TDC before the timing belt is installed... Once I installed it the intake side moves down 1/4 of a tooth...

Hi,

I'll try to give you the best advice I can without seeing it... Gota pic?

Well:
Start at the crankshaft with the timing gear spot on, then work your way up around the tentioner and waterpump ( w/tentioner loose!)

Then when you get to the cam gears try to slide the belt over from a perfectly square point. If any slack this should be on the intake side toward the tentioner! (this may need some persuasion from a 14mm end wrench and another hand if its wanting to not line up perfect*small adjustment*)

Once it's all on and right, then with a bolt in the crank, turn the crank three teeth counter clockwise on the gear.(this should take up most of your slack)

Tighten the tentioner bolt ( forgive me I don't have the tq specs handy, but your looking for near 1" of slack in the front (from the exhaust gear and crank)

Let me know if this works!

Before you attempt...
how many teeth are on your belt and which water pump do you have (teeth count)? correct belt??? This sometimes can be mistaken...

Rob

That's great. I assumed you had the correct hardware in the 1st place, that's why I posted this last

Have you had a chance to retry the install per the instructions I listed?

I have installed several, and I have never had a problem that I didn't remedy by the laymen termed directions that I posted.

Well everything is at TDC before the timing belt is installed... Once I installed it the intake side moves down 1/4 of a tooth... (This especially is why I said to have an extra hand help so it doesn't move when you try putting it all together)

If you have further problems let me know and I'll try to help further...

Why was this taken down?... I ask due to possible head milling, block decking etc... even though this would have to be a crazy amount of work lol.

One last thing if all else fails... Recheck the parts that on there (tooth count) people are human and may have been packaged wrong?

Best of luck,
Rob

you adjust it to where when you turn the crank pulley to give the belt tension all the marks would line up...so the crank pulley should be about 1/2 inch or 1/4 inch from TDC mark and cam gears should be about a tooth or so off..so when you turn the crank pulley all the marks would line up..its take a little messing with to get it right but you'll get it eventually. if you set everything to tdc and then turning the crank pulley to tighten the belt. everything will be off. trust me i've done timing too many times

any luck? I know this can be a pain sometimes but if you get a hand a finnagle the cam gears while working with the belt, it will work out for you. Some times the easiest of things can really test your patience this is one of them along with the B!t(h pin, and an a/c belt on /off.

best of luck,
Rob

Yeah today after work I decided to helicoil the thread for on the valve cover studs than after doing such an awesome job I proceeded to the damn timing....i went at it for about 2 1/2hrs still couldn't get it to align....i tried it by setting the crank pulley off by about 1/2 inch from tdc and the cams gear off a bit than when i would add the tension and tighten the stupid tensioner i rotated the crank and boomm the damn cam gears were off by half a tooth tried it several different way and still the damn thing will not line up!

So again today fiddled with it for about an hour managed to get it really close less than 1/8 of a tooth barely so i don't know should i just leave it like that or keep trying to get it closer? I tried the hanger trick and the other ones mentioned above and man it was just being the biggest pain in the ***....i take picture of what it looks like....

I had a belt that was always about a 1/16 to 1/18 of and inch off at the crank with everything else at tdc. Went out and got a new belt and everything lined up perfect. Put the old one back on to see if it would be off again and sure enough it was. Also, I double and triple checked that it was the correct belt.

I thought the same thing I ordered three different belts from work than tried one from one and yup it's been the same problem i've also counted the teeth on all 4 belts and they all match up....i'm stumble here....this is all i need to drop it in just get everything at TDC nice and perfect redo the valve lash adjustment than drop it in and go dyno tune it and break the sucker in!
