Good first bike: Honda VFR800?
Sure... it's a very nice bike.
you just need to be prepared for the costs associated with replacement parts when you drop her. If you are okay with that, its a great bike.

I'd agree that starting light is ~probably~ a better way to go. A 1998 VFR800 was my first and current bike. I was dead set on getting it and have never regretted it. I think the plusses for begginers would be the braking (linked), stability, and the easy, tractable, wide powerband. Negative aspects would be the weight and the overly responsive throttle at low RPM. Difficult to be smooth. I love my bike all things considered.
That being said, my learning curve would probably have been accelerated on something more "nimble".

We probably shouldn't derail this thread with that classic argument.
The only reason I started light and small was because I couldn't afford the most awesome bikes back when I started riding..

I went against most peoples recommendations for a first bike...I ended up taking home an 07' aniversary VFR just last friday. So far with 100 miles on it everything is super nice to look at and to ride.
I plan to keep this bike for a long time

I have an 04. Bought it new. I love it.
Like someone previously mentioned, it's a little on the heavy side. The VTEC engines on the newer ones can be tough to get used to as well. They are a very solid, easy to ride bike that won't flip you off if you decide to go full throttle- but still has great mid range power.
waxed it up yesterday

Edit- don't mind the DGK stickers...I always loved Stevie Williams, but now these stickers put me in the "young punk" category. Need to remove ASAP
