Ive been working on cars pretty much my whole life but I have never been on the inside of an engine. I guess I phrased the question wrong.
What I meant was: What needs to be done to change the valve seals?
I was told the head has to be pulled.

There are ways to do it without pulling the head. Turn the crank so that the cylinder you are working on is @ TDC. Then apply constant air pressure from a compressor. This is done a-la spark plug air adapter fitting. IIRC there are other more crude ways but the TDC + air is the one I have used.
