Default Valve adjustment question

im doing a valve adjustment for a buddy of mine, I read the c speed write up and I have a few questions.

the guy who originally showed me how to do a valve adjustment said when you rotate 1-3-4-2 you only rotate counter clock wise 90 degrees, but c speed says 180. was I miss informed?

and how much drag should there be on the feeler gauge? is it bad if they are a little on the tighter side? thanks for the help guys

they probably mean 180 degrees on the crank...which is 90 degrees on the cams....i start at TDC on the cams, then rotate in 90 degree incriments....you can stick a long screwdriver in the sparkplug hole to verify when the piston is at the top of the stroke. as for the feeler gauge, i always do it so there is a little drag on the gauge, but not so much as it gets stuck or hard to pull out. i usually leave the gauge in, tighten the lifter all the way, then back it off slightly. hope this helps.

maby thats what he meant cuz I did 90 degrees on the cams. ok well when I stick the feeler gauge in and tighten the screw until there is little pressure then do the back and froward thing. but there is a good amount of drag. its not impossible to get the gauge in or out but not free. thats why I was asking how bad it is if its a little on the tight side. will it make it tick if its too tight?

which thickness are you using for intake/exhaust....intake is .006-.007 and exhaust is .007-.008....so if ur using .007 for intake or .008 for exhaust and getting a lil excessive drag, it should be ok. but if ur at minimum specs, maybe just loosen them a bit and recheck.

.006 intake .007 exhaust. im asking cuz I did a valve adjustment on my b16a2 and its ticking louder now then it was before and I ran the feeler through before and after I did each valve. its def tighter but ticks louder now. i dont get it

if u use min spec i would leave a little slack. i did exh at .008 and intakes at .007 had a litle drag on them. i would rather have a little play and be able to adjust it a little tighter then not have enough.IMO

if theyre too tight, you run the risk of leaving a valve slightly open...i would think that ticking would be caused by loose lash.

was ur engine cooled down when u checked lash?

ya it sat over night. was bone cold.
I think ill re check them maby I used a loose spec or a nut backed off.

I was just checkin to make sure it wouldnt mess anything up if it was a little tight

taken from the acura manual guys, note the clearances in bold . hope this helps

Valve Clearance
Adjustment

Adjust valve clearance on No. 1 cylinder.
Intake: 0.08- 0.12mm (0.003- 0.005)
Exhaust: 0.15- 0.20mm (0.006- 0.008)

Loosen the locknut and turn the adjusting screw
until feeler gauge slides back and forth with a slight
amount of drag.

7. Rotate the crankshaft 180' counterclockwis to
bring No. 4 piston to TDC. The "UP" mark should
be pointing straight down. Adjust valves on No. 4
cylinder.

Rotate the crankshaft 180' c o u n t e r c l o c k w i s e
(camshaft pulley turns 90'). The "UP" mark should
be on the exhaust side. Adjust valves on No,3 cylinder.

8. Rotate the crankshaft 180' counterclockwise to
bring No. 2 piston to TDC. The "UP" mark should
be on the intake side. Adjust valves on No. 2 cylinder.
Number 2 piston at TDC:

true the ticking noise at least with mine was usually that they were to loose, IMO i would put them at max spec then run it up to temp, let it cool back down and check them again, if u have ticking then readjust them.

are steps 2 and 3 right for the cylinders? i thought it was 1-3-4-2 not 1-4-3-2

And remember that valve lash specs are specific to the cam so if he has an aftermarket cam, the specs may be different than stock.

why would an acura manual have the specs for a b16a? and that order doesnt sound right...should be 1,3,4,2.
