Ask the guy who built your engine, BUT if it was me i would use mineral oil 10w40 then do my first oil change at about 50 miles, then next at 100miles, then 500 miles, then 1500miles etc... Call me **** thats just how i roll and i have never had a problem with my break in process.

i usually thought turbo'd cars use synthetic oil for break in and regular use.

Standard oil for break-in. after your break-in period, (depending upon method) go to synthetic oil.

non detergent oil for break-in. depending on the bearing clearences is what you should base oil weight on.

i built the engine guys, i usually use mineral oil when i build an engine, i was just wondering wether its likely to burn abit of oil if i run the b18 on mineral oil with a turbo etc and if i was better off using part-synthetic and then fully sythetic once its broke in,
your thoughts guys

You dont need to run synthetic. you really dont need to run anythign special just a standard motor oil like castrol gtx 10w30 get it hot and make sure it doesnt overheat and drive it around the for a few miles varrying rpms and the load in those rpms accel and decel then change your oil and filter to some conventional motor oil againa dn your good to go. break in doesnt take hundreds or miles or even 50 miles. the rings seat and after that its ready to rock and roll. that whole hundreds of miles break in things IMO does and means nothing.

ive always run a fresh motor on castrol or valvoline 10w30 and never once had an issue. an over the counter conventional motor oil will work and will handle temps of 230. a good race oil will handle 300 temps as well as a synthetic. Ive never really like synthetic motor oil on a built motor. but thats just my personal preference.

cheers mate, do these engines and turbo engines in general tend to burn mineral oil ?

ive put some 15w40 mineral oil in it so will give it 50miles or so and then do a oil/filter change.

well ive used synthetic on break in before not knowing and that motor is still going strong lol

but now i use non detergent for the first 50 miles then normal oil for the first 500 and give it a beating (well not banging gears but romping it for sure) get on it and let it decell

but i break in the motors before i put the turbo kit on

I have done 6 honda motors on straight 30w non-detergent and had great results. I always do a change after one or two heat cycles and then another at 100miles...then synthetic or whatever you want to run.

synthetic off the start doesnt allow the rings to seat properly, whatever you do dont do this.

and you break a motor in quickly and then drive it they way you want it to run. if its a turbo car then boost it and tune it. running it for hundreds of miles does nothing. if its going to blow it will blow after 10 miles of break in or 1000 miles of break in. if its built properly it wont blow with a good tune

I use that to break in ALL of the motors I have ever built. It has additives that you don't find in normal grade mineral oil. You should pick up a bottle of "diesel" oil and read it sometime. That’s why they don't want you to run it in our "non-polluting" gasoline cars (other reasons too). ((People get way to critical on here.))

if you run conventional oil in a diesel it messes up alot of ****, kills seals, makes it burn oil etc...

Non detergent oil for break-in is what I have used on the 20+ motors I have built for people/myself.

We have started using Royal purple "break in oil" because it is one of the only oils that contains zinc left on the market. I think Joe Gibbs has an oil as well that contains zinc. Zinc is needed on a new block as well as all the internally lubricated moving parts.

You can also use a conventional oil and add zinc. zinc was removed about a year ago from our oils.
