Default Mis-Shifting

Yeah I know this is kind of a newbie question, but this forum has like 100 threads so deal ...
What is all the talk I hear about people mis-shifting their 6-Speed RSX-S's? Is it that much easier to screw up and damage the 6-speed gearbox? How much different is driving a DC5 6Speed than the traditional 5-speed transmission?

ok, so all these mis-shift stories are what i thought...
people who downshifted from 6th or 5th in 2nd. at the place i sold hondas at there was some idiot whose gilrfirend let him drive her s2000 around. because of him she had to have her clutch replaced, and her whole tranny twice. and then it sat at our dealership for 3 months cause he was a dumbass and mis-shifted from 5th to 2nd and bent 3 valves. dumb dumb f-cking people.

so if your just driving the rsx as a daily driver, and like a little speed every now and again, you should be safe with the shifting? i would assume double clutching also help to prevent this problem? imcurious about this whole thing too.

Ok first of all don't try and explain something if you know nothing about it. As for mis shifting it is not from 5th to 2nd gear. Where all the mis-shifts happen is from 3rd to 2nd gear. They take 3rd gear to redline(79oo but fuel cut off is at 83oo) and try and shift into 4th gear but the gear box is really close and alot of people shift right into 2nd which spikes the rpm up to 11ooo rpm and BOOM!!! And that is how a mis-shift happens. It sucks and I have never heard of a 5th to 2nd downshift, but you never know I guess.

3rd-2nd is about 90% (same w/ the itr) of the time remember.... i said "stories" you can't imagine how many times iv'e heard the "i was just driving on the highway and went shift into 4th and it went into 2nd ...boom" sure it did... and we usually replace it under warrenty if it was up to me i'd laugh in the kids face

and i've been in a couple cars that mis-shifted and died right there like itr 01-0129 (haha he's a member of this board but i won't say his name) 3rd-2nd =12 bent valves, new head, and ...... new tranny, new clutch and new axle......cause they exploded

total bill for mine was $8800 all covered under warrenty. 3rd to 2nd mis-shift, 9191rpm@69mph, 2 bent valves. I have never mis-shifted a car before, and I did not think it was going to happen to me, after all the threads I read, but whatever its fixed.

A friend of mine blew his motor TWICE in his 2002 RSX Type-S!! He took it back to Acura twice to get new motors in. He blew it because he mis-shifted both times....

Shift with your fingertips people! It is trying to muscle it into gear that gets you in trouble.

What were the effects of the two bent valves....Could you still drive it, was it loud as hell, etc. I too have mis-shifted but I was really lucky....you do have to be more careful than you would with a 5spd.
Later Guys

i've mis-shifted as well -- never done it before in any car, and i've been driving a manual since i started driving...

but anyway -- what other symptoms other than a car that won't start should one look for?

thanks!

I would have to disagree with the 3rd to 2nd being more common than the 5th to second downshift. when going from 3rd and trying for fourth its straight down. when going from 5th to 4th its at an angle and most people pull it too far over to the left and hit second. I know 2 people that have done it. 1 in an rsx and the other in an s2000. Both drivers are idiots though.

Perhaps a gear position indicator in the dash would be helpful? Maybe the driver would notice the "2" instead of the "4" before they let out the clutch and fragged the engine....
