K20a or K20z1?
looking to swap a new motor in the Ep but what would be better will the k20a pass smog what are the diff. between the two motors? ive been told just cams are different and compression by .03 this true?
The K20a is alot better, the flywheel is better on them too (stock 10.25lbs), the cams are better, and they are just better motors.. Its like comparing a type r vs gsr but with K series.. My friend has a swapped EK hatch with a z1 motor and there is no chance when I run my R against him. K20a FTW!!
Here are some specs:
2001-2007 Honda Integra Type-R (DC5) (K20a)
Displacement: 1,998 cc (121.9 cu in)
Compression: 11.5:1
Power: 220 bhp (200 PS, 132 kW) @ 8000 rpm
Torque: 152 ft·lbf (206 N·m) @ 7000 rpm
Redline: 8600 rpm
I-VTEC Engagement: 6200 rpm
2005-2006 Acura RSX-S (K20z1)
Displacement: 1,998 cc (121.9 cu in)
Compression: 11.0:1
Power: 210 hp (154 kW) @ 7800 rpm (SAE net J1349 Rev 8/04)
Torque: 143 ft·lb (194 Nm) @ 7000 rpm (SAE net J1349 Rev 8/04)
Redline: 8300 rpm
i-VTEC Engagement Window:5800 rpm
I dunno if the K20a will pass smog in Cali tho so you may be stuck with the z1

They are close to being the same, they are bigger than the 02-04 Type S motors but smaller than the Type R's.. Also if you lookin to do a good swap from the states (i dont know if JDM motors pass smog in Cali) why dont you consider doing a K24a2 (TSX) motor? They are like big *** Type S motors
they arent all that better to be honest. its nothing like 18c1 vs 18c5, both are an equally good platform to start from, but there is nothing really there to make one so much better than the other. i honestly would do a k24 frank and put that in, its cheaper and makes more power than both options. the light weight flywheels on the A only makes the car rev faster in honesty and was made for ease of matching for people that would drive such a car on a circuit, sam as the lsd in the trans, only good for circuit STOCK driving conditions. nothing notably spectacular. the z1 holds its revs a little better and has a similar powerband, the cams are in all the same, actually designed to be the same on paper but to run on a us engine. we loose a tad on compression the loss isnt noticed unless you are a human dyno. as car as smog i dont know what the deal is with motor swaps, but as long as u have a cat on and obd system is active you should be fine. so pick which ever ( cheaper), it dosent really matter.
well if u should choose which is one is cheaper...
of course k20z1 is gonna be cheaper unless u get lucky and find a cheapo k20a
and also if u plan on alot of aftermarket parts
u might as well get a z1 and get aftermarket pistons, cams, etc
imo at least
