Jeez those pictures suck. Looks like you have a really expensive camera but don't know how to use it. Did the owner of the G35 sell/give his original wheels to the 240sx owner?

By the way, 3OH!3!!!!! NEW ****!!!!!!

I'm saving them for a future post I'm gonna make--tentatively titled "Nice Try, But Your Photo Still Came Out Shitty." It'll be a humorous look at people who tried to take a good photo, but it just came out awful. I'm not trying to make fun of put down the photographers themselves; it's more about people not knowing what they're doing and I like to laugh at the final product when it comes out poorly, like a really crappy movie for example. It's also a good way to show people what not to do so we can all look at better photos in the future.

The good news is, you have nowhere to go but up!

If he has a D40x, he's probably using the kit lens. It's not a fantastic lens but it's definitely good enough to produce great photos. This is not what the OP did, but it's worth mentioning that a big problem with photo newbies is that they rush into buying equipment without knowing how to use it, or even the basic equipment they already have. A better lens will produce nicer photos, but if you don't know what you're doing in the first place, it won't make a difference.

There are a few problems as I see it, and I'm saying this to answer some questions people posted and to help the OP:

1. The composition is awful. When you see a photo, the first thought is "What am I looking at?" and the photo has to answer. Look at the second to last photo. This is a disaster. The cars are parked unevenly (spacing and angles), there's another car hiding in the background covered up by the Infiniti, the two cars on the side aren't even in the frame, and perhaps the worst offender, he just stood there and took a snapshot--in a parking lot. You really want to avoid just standing there and taking a photo--that's how our eyes see the world all the time. That view isn't exciting.

2. "JDM angles". Just as standing there and just shooting a snapshot is boring, angles like this are also a no-no. Again, the composition is bad (cars falling out of the shot), but the main offender is that somehow gravity has been tilted into a 45 degree angle. I feel like I'm gonna break my neck and fall out of my chair at the same time while looking at that. A little bit of angle can add to the drama, a lot of angle is just ridiculous.

3. Post processing. A couple of the shots are actually kinda cool, like this one. However, the editing is very poor. There is an extreme amount of contrast; the car is poorly defined and soft, the picture might even be out of focus. The framing is poor and the colors look flat.

4. Camera settings. I looked at two photos and they were at f/16 and f/22. That's way, way too high for shots like these. Lenses are their sharpest at f/8 to f/11. Higher than that (smaller aperture) will create a huge depth of field but you lose some sharpness. Also, when your aperture is so small, your shutter speeds are very slow. When that happens, it's easy to get camera shake, which will make your photos very soft.

My recommendations: set the camera to A mode. That will let you only adjust the aperture. Aim for f/8 and don't be afraid to go lower. The basic rule is that the inverse of your shutter speed should be higher than your focal length. For example, if you're shooting at the shortest (widest) focal length, 18mm, your shutter speed should be 1/20 minimum. Once you get a VR lens this will change, but keep that in mind for now. The next thing to remember is composition. Think of what you want to be looking at, of what you want your audience to see. Don't be afraid to use the zoom on your lens, and don't be afraid to move your body. Go ahead, lie on the ground or move your body into a weird contortion. No one's gonna see that, they're gonna see the end result. Lastly, once you've gotten your photos, remember to process very minimally until you really get the hang of it. Don't overdo it!

Hope that helps

If you post terrible-quality pics, expect criticism. If you can't handle it, learn how to take better quality pics, and then post.

Not a fan of the cars either btw (except maybe the TSX), very plain

May I recommend a book called: Understanding Exposure

I learned a lot from it. And I'm sure you will too.

Google it.
