My 1st Honda, 1991 Civic Si
Hi my name is Ryan from Warsaw, IN. Maybe some members here that are close to that area? I also own a E36 BMW 328i. But I always wanted a Civic because of how efficient, simple, cheap to mod, ect.
Anyway, found this one in Chicago on craigslist. It has a 2000 Civic Ex engine (D16Y8) and is said to have around 18,000 miles on. The car has like 240,000 miles. The pics show there is no rust except for like a quarter size surface rust on the rear fender (overall, car has less rust than my 96' BMW). And the car is in basically better mechanical condition than my Bimmer. New tires, alternator, battery, struts, bushings on all 4 sides, tierods, and of course the new engine. No air condition unit (save on car weight, and yourself by sweating away lbs as you sit in traffic). Price I paid, $1,400.

Anyway, my first issues to deal with are:
When sharp turns in parking lot, you can hear a clunking sound. (Cv joints?)
Today I noticed that the idle tends to get stuck at like 1,800rpm even when I depress the clutch. Or even when I do not press the gas in and while in gear (aka the car automatically is dialing in those rpms no matter what).
Ticking noise when acceleration. (not lifter ticking noise) (probably make a vid to show what I am talking about).
Anyway, I don't know anything really about these cars. So I am starting my journey into researching on ht and other online sources. The car came with a Haynes manual, but I hear I should probably get the Helms.

Clicking on sharp turns is very likely a CV boot...don't do the boot just get a aftermarket remaned one, most places offer a warrenty on them. The ticking could just mean it needs a valve adjustment done, not real sure on that one.
It looks like the former owner redecorated the dash just like I did on my hatch. Nothing like a nice fist sized hole in the dash for extra ventilation.

Lol, ya I don't know how the dash got to be like that. I mean, did someone punch the dash because they were in a rage or what? Most likely taping that over or something.
My plans are to put some lowering springs and struts to match. CV joints first though. Possibly look at new trannys. This is the 91 Si tranny with 240k miles. It shifts kind of hard, I mean, you gotta put some arm power to push the shift **** into each gear position. Looking into the idle problems right now though.
Future future plans are to repaint (i know a 30+ year veteran painter with a professional paint room who can do repaints for $1000s less than other places). New wheels, exhaust, ect... Can't wait to check out pricing of basic and performance parts on this car. I hope to be pleasantly surprised compared to costs on the Bimmer.

Hood, dash, and stuff. Worry about later. Performance over aesthetics is my philosophy here.

Yes, the sunroof isn't something I want. I want to get a delete panel to save on weight. For Bimmers you can buy cf panels that will replace your sunroof, any such products like that for these EF Si hatchbacks?
Also, I went to Taco Bell just now and ordered those 99cent cheesy beef burritos. Well anyway, when driving through echoing neighbor hoods it almost sounds like a lawn mower noise (I said ticking noise when acceleration). Not sure if this is what an exhaust leak sounds like?

Maybe ill make a vid tonight of my lawn mower exhaust sound.
I think it has a stock exhaust but it is loud.
My lights and dash light sometimes dim intermittingly. New battery and alternator though. Ill check with volt meter. Need to install vdo gauges.
My temp gauge always reads slightly below middle. Not sure if its accurate.
I'm at work now, will continue research later tonight. And tackle my idle issue.
Just attained a Helm manual.

my first car was a civic like that, miss it that clicking when your turning sounds like the axles which ever side is going bad and most likely you have a bad cv boot, and that ticking hopefully isnt a spun rod bearing good luck with your build.
