...in order to keep their rpms down at higher hwy cruising speeds? I simply would like to know what parts are needed to do this. I am thinking of doing this on a JDM ITR Tranny with the 4.7FD that I am purchasing for my 99GSR. I was thinking of putting in either an LS or GSR 5th, does anyone know exactly which parts of the 5th gear assembly I will need, is it just the actual 5th gear or are others needed? And is anything else needed when reassembling the tranny, gaskets, etc? Any input would be appreciated, thanks
The JDM ITR tranny already uses a GSR 5th gear. So you wont have to swap in another 5th gear.
there are a few people who have it on this board, i cant remember who...
but everyone will try and talk you out of it
the reason i didnt go with adding an ls 5th gear to my tranny is the cost of all the parts
to do the job right, it will cost about250-350 in parts alone

I have a 4.785 FD in my USDM ITR tranny and then put the USDM GSR 5th gear.
There is a considerable gap when shifting.
If I had a choice as to do it again, I wouldn't

done it many times, you need both counter and main gears from LS. I usually charge $350 for this including labor.

Wait a minute here, you mean the ITR 5th(& 4th?) is the same as the GSR 5th(& 4th?), how is that possible, I thought they were different? If this is true then only the LS 5th would help out a bit, right?
Let me see if I've gott this right, here's what I know combined with what you guys are now saying:
1st gear: USDMR, JDMR, and GSR all the same.
2nd: USDMR & JDMR the same, GSR different.
3rd: USDMR & JDMR the same, GSR different.
4th & 5th: You guys are saying they are the same, I thought they were different though, guess I was wrong.
Final Drive: USDMR, pre 98 JDMR, and GSR all the same @ 4.4, 98+ JDMR 4.785.
So is the above accurate? Can you guys all confirm this. If so, then it seems as though only the LS 5th would help and I dont think that the $ would be worth it. Thanks.

You see, I didnt think that the ITR's(any of them) and the GSR's 5th gears were the same, how can they be, for example I have been told(and thought I saw) that at approx 80mph a USDMR's rpms are at approx 4500rpm. And at that same rpms, my GSR's speed would be approx 87mph(this is a fact as I usually cruise on the interstate just under the 4400rpm VTEC activation point and my speed in atleast in the mid 80's). And since the USDMR and the GSR DO HAVE the same 4.4 FD, then that would mean that the 5th gear would have to be different, wouldnt it? What's up here?

Wait a minute, my mistake, I think I misread those previous posts
, now I see that it says that the JDM ITR has the same 4th & 5th as the USDM GSR, not the same as the USDM ITR, so they are the same then, and the USDM ITR and the JDM ITR DO HAVE different 4th & 5th gears.....Now this is right, RIGHT??? I think I got it now, stupid me, I just thought that all the ITR's had the same gears(1-5), just that the FD's were different in those cases. Cool.
