I dunno if he took his needles off or not. I'd recomend not to if I was you since you don't know how to get the clear cover off. But I'll help you out.
Pull out the cluster then on the back there is 6 little plastic clips you have to push in and the plastic cover will pop off. If you don't know how to remove the cluster go get your self a service manual asap.

USE SHARPIE! its better than the one i used..
no i didnt take the needles off..i just took off the plastic cover..but you have to paint them gently.i mean REAL GENTLY..so you wont break the needle..there are 4 clips around the sides of the cluster..just pop them then it will be open quickly..

Try it? Been there done that on model cars I built when I was in grade school. Difference is I was using the proper materials that wont wash away with water and wont sun fade after a hot day in SD.
Key word is it looks. I can care less what color people choose for their needles, as long as they like it and its done the right way.
Exactly, its an expression. Im sure everyone who saw the pictures had their own expression or reaction.
Props on trying something new and not being a poor sport over negative critism. If you were looking for something with a more professional/quality finish, I would tell you to use materials specifically made for this type of project. It would save you headaches for when the Crayola stuff fades, drips, melts off the unprepped glossy plastic needles.
