jdm vs. usdm
It's a lot easier to find a Jdm swap from Hmotorsonline with low mileage than it is to track down a local, Usdm swap. The power differences are very slight. You won't beat a Usdm Type R with a Jdm Gsr swap for example.
I hope when you say Maryland isn't as laidback as the west you aren't speaking of Cali. Because Cali has some UPTIGHT SOBs running that **** when it comes to cars/engines, etc.
Cali has uber strict emission law making it difficult. The police usually don't care about you having a different motor except in areas of CA where thief is high and if you have a motor with its serial number shaved off.
dang AZ is pertty chill lol but ive been to cali to vist fam sactown/bayarea isnt that bad i drove my friends integra he had a jdm type r but it passed emissons that joint was fast... when we got pulled over for a brake light out the cop checked under hood... my friend said he blew old motor and he just got the type r which was ture...cop didnt seem to care much maybe he was just one that wasnt a jerk lol...

I don't know anything about emmissions because over here you can pretty much swap in whatever you wan't.
But other than power differences a jdm motor will most likely have less mileage. And I think the ecu's cut off at 180km/h.

definitely not talking about cali, worst place to own a street tuner considering so many restrictions. cops are dicks on a whole new level. they will pull you for anything. never had my hood flipped but i've heard the stories
JDM
Pro's:
- in general, low mileage
- usually higher comp, more hp
- often gen freebies ie..headers
- cheap!!
Con's
- no way to know exact mileage on most engines
- not legal in some states
- some parts don't cross over ie. some tranny parts
