Beginners Guide to ITR Ownership (Keeping your R Safe from Thieves)
Is there any way we could get a written set of guidelines in regards to owning an ITR? I feel there are too many "I live in __________ and want to daily an R. Will it get stolen" threads. It would be cool if everyone could come together to compile a definitive source of tips and general best practices when it comes to keeping your R safe from thieves. Any further questions could be directed to this thread as well, instead of individual "will it get stolen" threads. I've searched for a thread like this and ran through the FAQs, so if I missed something I shall don my flame suit now. I just hate seeing them get stolen and would want people considering the purchase to really think about the precautions necessary to keep the thieves away. I believe this would keep a lot of R s safer and would get rid of most of the "it won't happen to me BS."
Hondatuning magazine did an article on how to keep your ride safe a few months ago. Good info and they even had ways to do it on the cheap.
If only it were that easy. A garage is no longer safe enough. Multiple layers of deterrants are your single best chance at preventing theft. A "good" alarm instal is definitely key. Stealth as possible. Relocate the brain to a secure location that cannot be ripped out upon entering the car as well as a back up battery. Kill switches are a must as well. The boot is also an excellent defense mechanism. The more layers the better. If they want it bad enough they will get it. Even the unstartable car can still be picked up and towed away, always remember that. The boot will help with thieves trying to tow away though.
That is my quick $.02.

From: Howcome we park on driveways, and drive on parkways?
^^^ ditto....
i have a EJ6 with a JDM ITR and i have 2 cars in the way of the garage to get it out...and those are both secure, so if you can get 2 cars out of the way, and figure out how to get my car started in the garage that is right below my bed, without anyone in my family waking up to beat your ***, then props to you...

Don't park it at the mall or anywhere out of your line of site. I also park vehicles in front of my garage and have an alarm and whatnot set up. I'm also an extremely light sleeper and keep all sorts of unpredictable hours. I'm awake more often than asleep.
This isn't brought up often, but having a dog with good ears (and a loud bark) is a damn good theft deterrent.
Ya didn't exactly include that information initially LOL. So i understand your set of circumstances now and yes, you are safer than most who that set-up. My point was that many have found their cars missing from their garages and that it is not 100% safe.
I hear ya, a garage alone is not enough. I have some of the other theft deterring items you mentioned as well. I think you also said that if they want it bad enough they will get it and that is 100% the truth.
Garage for sure. Just don't advertise yourself too much on the web especially. Stay away from rice gathering and have a second DD.
yes dont advertise your car and watch drives behind you sometimes the theives could have been following you the whole time without you noticing
land mines. lots of land mines and vultures on chains. I always wanted to build a gate like the Jurassic Park gate just for the "I'm big dont **** with me" mind set a theif would get.
your ONE thing isnt going to stop your HONDA from getting stolen, let alone an R. GOOD LUCK!
The info will always be openly accessible, but that doesn't make deterrents like a boot for example any easier to get around. My idea wasn't to set up some fail proof plan, but rather to list some logical precautions that could be made. No matter who can view the info, heightening awareness on this subject is worth it. Maybe we should come to some conclusions regarding what precautions are worth the effort and are true deterrents to theft. We could have some detailed explanations and maybe some picture examples. I know some examples are super simple (GARAGE IT) and some are some crazy *** MacGyver ****. I guess the hard part would be coming to a consensus on what should be included.
