Default Transmission Guru's get in here.... broken bearing, WHY???

Well below is a pic of a bearing at the end of one of the rods in my GSR transmission. We recently put the LSD in and drove the car a little but didnt beat on it very much at all.

But as you can see the bearing case is cracked, the outer ring is missing junk. And we're wondering what the hell would have caused this. The case was put all the way on and tightened on by hand before tightening the case bolts, so it wasn't just snapped together.

Any thoughts here....

1) Did you spec/shim everything within tolerances/specification?
2) What fluid were you using?

I was using GM synchro mesh, and the bearing were spec'd to be within tolerance of the GSR acura manual.

The thing I can think of is if the c-clip that holds the case onto that rod was not seated properly and was pushed down onto the rod. Then the c-clip would have been forced around that top bearing and may have cracked it.Then once driving the small piece came out and the crack may have gotten worse.

Otherwise I can't think of anything. The bearing still spins just fine though. So strange.

lock ring wasn't fully spread and slipped over the bearing, when tighten down you cracked it.

"Rookie" mistake......and yes I've done it myself once.

That sounds like it to me, but Im not the rookie who did it. I should have been, but I had to work. So my brother ended up putting it back together and probably skipped that part.

Whoops.

Thanks guys, for confirming what I thought happened.
