I was wondering if anyone else has chopped off the roof from a car and successfully welded it into the new car. Basically what I want to do is cut the moonroof out of a 88-91 Civic hatch or Integra and weld it into an 88-91 civic sedan. I realize i need to get the contours of the roof to match up. im just wondering if anyone else has attempted this. Would it make more sense to cut the roof to fit and retrofit a moonroof from another car into the sedan. The easyest might be a 92-up prelude moonroof since they slide back outside the car insted of a civic or integra which slide into the roof. Whats everyones thoughts. Does anyone have pics of this being done?

 

If you find the same model as yours that has a sunroof it would be a lot easier. The moonroof frame and rails take up a lot of space under the roof skin.

 

Not worth it unless you can drill out spot welds and swap the whole skin...

 

Thats why I was thinking the prelude setup would be easiest because it slides above the roof instead of into it.

Thats an option i didnt think of. I wonder if i could trim down the roof of another car and weld it in. The only thing that i would be worried about is how it would seal against the front and rear windows. I would have to cut down the panel... Hrmmmmmmmmm

 

The Prelude still has long rails to contain the sliders and other parts. If you look at the roof the motor access plug isnt far from the window glass.

 

Does anyone know if the roof panel on a 88-91 Civic hatch is the same length and width as an 88-91 Civic sedan. Does anyone care to go out and measure there roofs for me?

 

Ive done a few of these in reverse. Taking out the sun roof and installing a solid panel. Drill the spot welds and reweld the newpanel with spot welds pretty easy and straight foreword.

 

its do-able not to bad. but i honestly wouldnt waste all that...

 

use a 91 civic ex roof.

 

EX's didn't have sunroofs - the ones that did, here in the US, were mostly aftermarket universal units installed by the dealers.

Hatch and Sedan roofs are not the same.

Just get a Webasto universal spoiler sunroof installed by a reputable shop. They will have a lifetime guarantee against leaks.

Trust me - it will be MUCH easier in the long run than trying to mess with a bunch of custom sheet metal fabrication.
