Default CRMB Fab Thread

We've been a bit slower as of late, so we've taken on some fabrication work. Not really our specialty, but work none the less.

This is a volvo we just completed. Downpipe back. Borla resonator. Flo-Pro Mufflers. Hand made double wall tips. Lots of 3" 304 stainless. Couple v-bands. Kind of bitch to get it all packaged tightly - not a alot of room over the suspension.

This shows the three step process for taking previously fabricated pieces and turning them into CNC bent pieces. The piece in the back towards the wall would take the average OK fabricator 30-40 minutes to build it correctly. It was the original design, that hadn't been optimized for manufacturing. The piece in the middle was modified to allow for enough clearance for cnc bending (you need 2 * diameter minimum between your bends) on the car. The third piece is the final digitized cnc bent piece. It takes 28 seconds to bend one. Comparing the cnc piece versus the hand fabricated piece (and they made this part for years like that). It's quite a time savings when you are making a bunch.

Looks good. I would rotate that v-band so it is not sticking down to the ground

Does it matter where the resonator is installed and will you loose power with one also can you lower the decibels by adding more than 1

On the resonator - I couldn't tell you. Depends on the vehicle. We did a 545i BMW that lost power after we removed the main catalytic converter and replaced the muffler. We had to add a high-flow catalytic converter, additional resonator and a new muffler to pull the power over stock. Didn't get any better pics of the car (wasn't really documenting the vehicle, just the work we did).

Sharp eyes on those vbands. I didn't notice that in the pics. He did rotate all of them before we sent it out. What he forgot to do was put a gasket between the downpipe and the exhaust though (doh).

I never understood why more fabricators don't send out pieces for you to replicate on your CNC bender. Seems like a much more efficient way to do business. If I were Full-Race or someone like that, I would absolutely have you guys bend downpipes for my standard off the shelf kits. You have to buy the metal anyway, I can't imagine a custom piece being that much more expensive than 2 180*s.

Stuff looks good.

I know FR does use some CNC bent pieces for the downpipes of some of their kits and probably for more than that, I just don't see their kits very often.

I think it's just where fabricators are in the general business cycle. As soon as shops stop being "fab shops" and start orienting/focusing on more of the side of selling their product versus making their product then they tend to.

We have Pines 3 axis, Schwartz-Robitec single axis, and Hines 3 axis CNC benders. Schwartz is the best. Followed by Hines. Followed by our Pines.

Eugene, you are all setup.

It's a good machine for up to 200-250 parts per day. We are replacing it with a bigger 5 axis cnc stacker machine. We also have 4 more single axis pines benders in storage we need to sell ranging from 1.5" to 6" machines if anyone wants one.

Looks good! I'm confused about one part though, the solid hangers. Is that whole brace supported on rubber grommets or did you mount the exhaust directly to the body? How does that hold up with the exhaust expanding and contracting?

There is rubber above the brace, it's bolted through it. That's stock mounting.

CRMB, do you ever require automated welding?

Euro Bike Part we converted to CNC:

One of our all time least favorite parts to make. 1.25 schedule 10 bent pipe on a 1D radius. Collector is so short it has to be made from 45 degree bends. We go 3 to 1, to T3 in 1". Yah.

We've used a few different companies for automated welding before. But we used to take on a lot more welding/fabrication work though.
