i was told that a stock altenator for the 88 si crx only has enough power to just run the car and not a system. Does anyone know if this is true? Also the system i want to put in is not that big watts wise.
i have my stock alternator running in my rex with a full componant set in the front and rear off of a 700 high amp....not a problem at all...no bass set up here though

I bought a '91 Civic and installed an 800 watt Alpine system in '92. I replaced the battery with a much larger one (had to place in a battery box in the trunk).
I ran the system for 10 years before I had to remove the components, but the alternator lasted about 12 years. I pushed the system pretty hard during that time. The battery absorbed the load of the subs.
They have smaller specialized batteries for that application now. Or you can use a capacitor. I wouldn't worry about the charging amperage of your alternator.

Not a cut and dry question. How many amps do you plan on pulling? What kind of music do you listen to mostly? There are a few things you can do to ease the load on the alternator (second battery, caps), but if you're going to be continuously drawing a lot more amperage than the alternator can supply, you might want to look into a bigger alt.
