3rd gear I wonder?
Why is it that 3rd gear grinds when your pushing the Type-R or any honda for that matter to its limits? Is there a way to have a smoother shift. Most of the time I don't push my Tpye-R to the limits, but just wondering if there is anything that I can do to not hurt that damn 3rd gear. Change the tranny fuild, stainless stell clutch line, etc. What are your thoughts fellows?
rule number one: LEARN TO DRIVE.
I don't want to be an a$$, but you gots to learn how to drive your car before anything. You grinding third gear would be operator error. Not the car. I gots me a GSR tranny, and ever time I go to third, no grind. Pushing right before redline. All my lines are stock hoses, and stg 1 exedy. practice, practice, and the same as before. Like the guy who can't parallel park with a manual. Operator error.

LOL it just boils down to timing it just right that I know and not forcing it in there
. On a serious tip does upgrading the quality of tranny fuild, , and such forth help any?

Agreed, probably your 3rd gear synchro, 3rd seems to wear faster then any other gear, probably that 90 mph freeway downshifting...haha
Yeah, I get this... when I slam the hell out of the shifter at the redline with poor clutch management.
So don't slam the shifter into third gear, and make sure you push the clutch pedal all the way down when you do the shifting.
If you continue to rape on your transmission, that synchro will be shot and eventually it will grind every time you shift into third gear. So take it easy and don't drive like you're in a race every time you shift.

user error for sure.
you're probably trying to get in there too fast, and you probably release your clutch before youre actually into third,
i know, cause this is what happens to me sometimes.

hey man i feel ur pain lol.. it happens to me too.. not always but my third does the exact same.. i've tried changing the way i shift.. and lol it ends up missing..but i'm trying to find out ways to shift better to see if its just me.. or syncros.. who knows.. GL lol
LOL, its you. Nothing is wrong with the tranny, nor the syncros. If it was a bad tranny, it would have been recalled with enough compliants to honda. Everyone that missed thrid gear, or grinds, practice my good friends..the end.
I doubt it would be a problem with 3rd gear more likely a error in the way you shift the car. You normally hear syncro problems from 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 4th. Check your motor mounts.
I had a guy destroy a brand new 3-4 synchro sleeve, springs, and rings by trying to force it into 4th gear. It blocked him out of 4th gear at 9500+ rpm and he just kept trying to push it into gear, then couldn't get it into 3rd gear because he had smashed all the teeth on the synchro sleeve.
The synchro rings clearanced at > .030" with the new rings, and when I examined it after the destruction, it clearanced .007" on the 4th gear synchro and ~.015" on the 3rd gear synchro; the minimum spec is .020".
The point is that if it grinds or blocks you out of gear, then don't try to continue forcing it. It'll just wear the synchro rings and smash the teeth on the gears and synchro sleeve that much faster.
