yea about that. i paid $4700 for mine in 2000. im not sure how much they are new now, but finding a used, streetable one in the states would be hard. also, finding parts for it can get pricey. i ordered a bunch of parts from the uk because when you call anyplace in italy they are all so lazy the say "wea calla you tamarraaaa". most mitos are brought the the states for the track. do some research on the bike.
if so :D
yes and no. most of the aftermarket is handled by the factory in the form of privateer kits.(kits to make your bike race-ready). i got my hands on a privateer kit and it had nearly everything you could imagine. carbon kevlar muffler and full exhaust, new cylinder, head and piston. new carbon fiber reeds, about 20 different jets for the carburetor, five different rear sprockets, and a bunch of other random stuff. the kit cost about 2500, but was totally worth it. i had so much fun trying out all the different setups and possibilities. its deff. the beginner kit for the aspiring road racer.
do you know any local dealers around the OC area?
A good first bike would be a beater under 600cc's for a four or under 750cc's or so for a twin. Looks should be secondary as long as the bike is functional and reliable... Preferably something NOT in the sport or superbike catagory
i would caution against getting a bike that's a pain to find parts for. after dumping it, OP is going to be waiting for weeks (if not months) to get things fixed.
They you could get a 2 stroke 125 or 250 as a 2nd bike just for trackdays...
We all dream of becoming MotoGP riders...but you have to start rather early and have TONS of $$$$$....some riders have started later than others, but unless you have a lucky streak finding a great sponsor or win the lotto, it's going to be hard, even if you have the natural gifts needed for motorcycling.
I was once in the same position as you, since I'm always wanting to compete in any kind of sport in begin practicing, so I wanted a bike to properly hone my skills for the future. As chance came, I ended getting a XT225, something VERY different from what I originally had planned (Wanted a CBR250RR or similar), but ended enjoying it.
Get anything cheap to learn the basics and get the feel for riding...buy yourself some gear and go ride...you won't regret it.
Two stroke for a first bike? Please that thing is gonna be a nightmare. Rossi started riding around four or five years old so good luck catching up. That tweo stroke will have no pwer down low and have fun getting it smogged. Since you said Honda, I'll throw it out there, F4i. Some say its too much bike, but many people start on 600s and do just fine.

My first bike is a 93 CBR F2. I love it! Its a blast to ride but I also do know my limits. I don't try and lean the bike and I never show off. As long as you are self disciplined and you have respect for your bike, A 600cc should be okay. They are less forgiving though. That is an uncontrollable (as I call it). No matter how careful you are, A mistake can and will happen. A 250cc can be less forgiving than a 600cc but in the end..... It still hurts to fall ha!
Just my $.02

Well, as a 1st bike I would recommend getting a properly sized bike...get a Ninjette (250), Ninja/EX500 or GS500F...they should give you a lot of fun, and also help you deal with the basics of riding...and helping you rise your skill level much faster than if you started in a 600.
I sense that you were much like me when I started riding, you want to be fast, to be competitive...but to reach that level, you gotta start small.
You don't want to buy as a 1st bike one that is a grey import or difficult to get parts. You wil want to get on the bike and enjoy it, not be at home stuck trying to register/find parts for it.
