Default Transmission noise

My step-brother bought a 1997 LX sedan and was told by his mechanic it needed a new throw-out bearing. I replaced the throw-out bearing as well as the clutch and pressure plate and the noise went away, but only when the clutch was disengaged

I searched here and came to the conclusion that the input shaft bearing was the likely culprit so I pulled the tranny AGAIN and replaced the ISB and seal.

Just finished putting the tranny back in and it's still making the same grinding noise. It only does it when the clutch is engaged (pedal out) and when driving. It comes and goes if I finesse the gas a bit when driving, but it's pretty constant. It's quiet as can be when I push in the clutch though.

I've done a couple transmission/clutch replacements on these cars as well as my old Mazda, but I haven't had this much trouble.

Any ideas what it could be? Mainshaft bearing?

Just wondering. Would a bad pilot bearing cause these symptoms? The clutch kit only had the pressure plate and clutch disc so the stock pilot was left in.

This will be my third time taking this tranny out, second time splitting the case, third time lifting it back in by myself. My back freaking hurts. lol.

Thanks for the reply man. I was pretty sure I was splitting the tranny again, but I was kinda hoping there might be something else I could check before diving in again.

Yeah, I called my step-brother and he's going to pick up a pilot bearing when he gets the mainshaft bearing. Not sure if he'll spring for the other bearings right now, he just wants it quiet, working, and on the road. I told him next time it comes out a new one is going in. No more of this splitting cases shenanigans.

Again, thanks for the input guys, always good to get a second opinion from someone who's been there, done that.

I'm all over the beer. If it was mine and I hadn't figured out how to take it out already, I would have just replaced the entire thing. I don't really have any specific knowledge, just what I learn from forums like this and taking my time with things to figure it out. Anything's possible with the right resources, patience, and beer. When it comes down to it, it's all just nuts and bolts.

Got it out and split the tranny again. It's definately looking like the mainshaft bearing was the culprit. It's proper ****ed. I also found the new pilot bearing. It was in the bottom of the box wrapped in tape and bubble wrap. I`ll replace that as well this time around.

Edit: Now let us all laugh at me for not checking it the first time I pulled and split the tranny. Hardy har har...

main shaft bearing is on the other side of the input shaft inside the tranny. so you have to drop it split the case and pull out the mainshaft.
